Not Naim, but... home studio monitor recommendations?

Posted by: chiba on 09 February 2006

I know there are some musicians here, but I wasn't sure which topic to post this in. Please forgive the non-Naim content, but...

Currently I using headphones (Stax SRS-2020) for my home studio, as I mostly play at night, but I want something better than my multimedia speakers for daytime use, so I plan to add some passive near-field monitors. I intend to power them with a T-Amp, so something reasonably efficient would be preferable (not that my listening volumes are very high). I'm mostly producing ambient music, so DJ type boomboxiness is not required. Does anyone have any suggestions? Something around the 1-200 quid range? So far Behringer's Truth B2031P and Alesis' Monitor One MKII would seem decent choices. Thanks!

Hi Chiba

A friend of mine has been using Tannoy Reveal 6 . I think he paid just under US$400.00. They sound great imho.

I use PMC TB2s. They are very neutral, have a realistic bottom end for such small monitors and mixes transfer really well to other systems - including my Naim one! I power them with a NAP 180 though - so not sure the T-Amp would be up to it. Probably best to get a friendly PMC dealer to loan you a pair.

Studio use based reviews here..

There are active ones too, in your price range reviewed here.

Lots of other monitor reviews on the Sound on Sound website.
