love the early Sinatra in capitol years. Later on he rerecorded with Nelson Riddle so he had total control and all the money. Just not as great and the TV specials when he tried to do contemporary things to be hip really didn't work.

He didn't have vocal range but he has phrasing down. I heard when a new song came he wanted only the lyrics so he could get comfortable with them like talking trying many different ways and always perfect diction. Then the music was fitted in for support.

that's a very interesting approach. Today's singers don't do that.

If you listened to the Concert Sinatra's 'Ol' Man River' you might change your mind about Sinatra's vocal range and control.

One of my favourite DVD-As. Sadly it decided to go "walkabout" at a show I was hosting. I haven't been able to find a replacement at a sane price since.

I see that the MOFI just announced that the Concert Sinatra is available from the original master tape in 180g vinyl.

Curious to hear it as the original pressing is excellent.

I never got Sinatra at all. Just couldn't take his voice, which I found tuneless. Much preferred Tony Bennett, Perry Como, and today I think Michael Bublé is far superior. Strange isn't it?

It certainly is!

I'm sure my Dad has a copy of "The Concert Sinatra". I'll have to liberate it. Temporarily of course!

Regards,
Steve.

The MOFI 180g 2LP "Live in Paris (1962)" is also wonderful...if you can ignore the racist comments about Sammy's people.

When I was a kid, we all wanted to be cool like Franky Sin when we grew up.

Nor I, but nor did I get any of the other artists on your list - I much preferred Harry Nilsson.

+1 Big Grin

Sinatra is like American institution/anachronism. ( good 'ol days )

there's something comforting about listening to 'Summer Wind' in a lazy summer afternoon sipping lemonade on the porch thinking 'life can't get any better than this.'

it's a sort of lost optimism to me.
