The Guinness Premiership Thread

Posted by: Chillkram on 12 January 2007

As we have a football thread I think we need a Guinness Premiership thread as well in the run up to Wasps taking revenge at Welford Road in April.

Details can be found here on the season so far.

Remember, Wasps are the play off kings!

Bugger, you beat me to it (the last time a Wasp beats a Tiger on this thread, I'll have you know...!!)

I was going to call it 'Shoot Out at the OK Corral', or perhaps rather 'Foregone Conclusion at Welford Road'. Cool

Second half of the season's going to be a goody ... certainly better than that poncy cricket rubbish that some people have been making a fuss about... Winker

You won't be able to miss me, when we meet up for THE Match - Green with Tiger Stripes, as wide as the Leicester Front Row.

They'rrreee Greeeeaat!

For those confused by the name 'London' Wasps, they play at High Wycombe. Leicester Tigers play at Leicester.

Bring it on, James!

We're getting ready for our usual strong finish and should be in full flow come April.

You should know not to upset a Wasp....You may get stung!

England insearch of a decent fly half?

An excellent performance from Alex King to put London Wasps on the verge of qualifying for the last eight this afternoon.

Oh, and I suppose Leicester did ok as well!

The sooner the play off business is dropped the better.

You finish top of the league you win it.

Looks like no European Cup then for next year.....

Qualification was always going to be an outside bet for Bath anyway.

Can anyone let me have the 'Bluffers Guide to Rugby'?

To be honest, it is this Forum that has re-lit my active interest in Rugby (and one or two other things) having not had any great opportunity to follow things actively, apart from the odd games live ('real live' and on telly), since university days 'some years ago...'

Leicester is my team of choice (a) because half my family are from there, and (b) a cousin played for a XV (I am not claiming the XV !) many years ago, when they still had letters instead of numbers on their backs, and Dusty Hare had hair.

So I'll do plenty of gauntlet-down-throwing (Chillkram Winker) but you might not get a huge number of sensible and incisive technical comments from me (anyway, in my own day, being in the front row I never actually saw the game, just the battle, if you know what I mean...!)

Confession over.

Watching Wasps tonk Leicester with me and Jamie in April will teach you all you need to know about rugby!

That'll be 'tonking' in the sense of 'watching the ball crossing your own try line' I presume? Winker

All I'm saying is, "You'll be seeing a lot of this....."

And this....

And definitely this.....

I had thought of some searingly witty captions in response, but fortunately for (a) 'the pensioner' and (b) 'the butterfingers' the Forum system is biased towards Wasps, because it won't bring up the pictures again with 'reply with quote'...

I like the last picture though, two players putting-in sufficient effort to at least have broken into a sweat... Big Grin

And what on earth are the RFU thinking of with their proposal for a ten (regional) team premier leagure?
Posted on: 18 January 2007 by JWM
Hari kiri in terms of grass roots local support, I would imagine.

In terms of Rugby, about the most 'regional' we English folk tend to do is the Six Nations.

Some people may follow Man Utd because it is 'the most famous soccer TEAM in the world', but things are very different with Rugby.

It is part of our cultural make up to follow teams identified with particular places, however we come to follow them. I get the impression, though, that with Rugby there is much more of a 'connectional' basis for following a particular CLUB (and I deliberately use the word CLUB rather than TEAM - it is indicative) - perhaps because you (or family) are from the area, or you know someone who plays for that Club, etc.

I cannot see how the homogenisation of club rugby into a lukewarm grey mush will be the salvation of the National Level game, which presumably is the RFU's aim? To achieve that will require a different kind of jizzing-up.

That's my humble tw'penny worth.

They seem to be trying to emulate Super 14.
