Porcupine Tree - indigO2, October 19th

Posted by: markah on 06 October 2008

I remember from another thread that there are a few forum members going to this concert in a couple of weeks time. I was wondering if anyone fancies meeting up beforehand, perhaps for a drink/something to eat? I'm travelling down by train (only about 6/7 hours or something all told on a Sunday!) and should be in the area by around 3pm.
I'll be staying overnight at the Docklands Travelodge and I believe there is someone else from the forum there who is going to this gig, so if you fancy meeting up drop me a line.

Regards to all,

Mark

The setlist that they are currently playing is very good. I won't post it here in case you want to be surprised. Available unsurprisingly on the Porcupine Tree forum in the gigs section.

I do hope they play Sentimental.

Hi all,

Sorry I've not been in touch but my main pc has been poorly - it's currently showing the blue screen of slow and painful death. I've borrowed seagull jn's laptop for this...

Looks like we're driving but we won't be there in time for a pre-gig drink/meal.

...the main pc has just switched itself off, time for a new one methinks, good job I've got a backup of my files/photos/itunes library(touches wood - it's only one backup not two so therefore not a real one)

Hope to meet up with you there...

Well what a superb night out. Me and Mrs Lontano had a fabulous evening in the company of fellow forum members. A nice drink followed by a good social Chinese meal and then we witnessed a blistering Porcupine Tree performance. My ears are still ringing.

Great sound at the Indigo venue and an excellent setlist. The whole band impressed me immensely but I have to single out both Steve Wilson who gave it his all and the drumming of Gavin Harrison - is there a better rock drummer on the planet - I doubt it. His technique has to be seen to be believed.

A lot of Fear of a Blank Planet and In Absentia tonight made it onto the setlist. Anaesthetize was stunning.

Normal
Drown With Me
Stars Die
What Happens Now?
Anaesthetize
Open Car
Dark Matter
Wedding Nails
Prodigal
Strip The Soul / .3
Half Light
Way Out Of Here
Sleep Together

Fear Of A Blank Planet
Halo

We had a great time, and many thanks to everyone who came for their great company; it was a real pleasure to meet some new folks from the Forum. Doesn't time fly when you're discussing Hi-Fi with the similarly afflicted?

A great performance indeed from Porcupine Tree (Fear of a Blank Planet plays at rather loud volume as I type this) and thanks Adrian for posting the tracklist. I recognised most of the material but encroaching senility meant I was unable to put names to many of them.

Clearly the Indigo O2 sound system has been very well engineered and is probably the best sound quality I've yet heard at a live gig. My only slight complaints are that for those of us of somewhat larger stature the seats are rather on the neat side with very limited knee room, and it was rather hot (note to self - dig out your "Barry Manilow World Tour 1987" T-shirt for the next concert and leave off the thermal long-johns).

The piccies came out very well Adrian! Smile

Thanks Tony. No photoshop touchup was required!!

I will post some more photos from the gig later. Was a bit too tired to do too much with them when I got in last night.

I am going to be be playing PT non stop all week. I enjoyed the show so much.

A wonderful experience and the Music was great too.As munch said great food,Company and music. One of the best concerts I (we) have been to. Sound was good, seats OK (I didn't think I had shorter legs than Tony), but it was bit too hot.

Big thank you to Lontano (Adrian) for the lift home, saved us loads of time and aggravation.

Mrs Lontano has just been jumping round the lounge pretending to be Steve Wilson to Halo. Some pics from last night.

To all those there last night, great to meet up and a very enjoyable evening it was too - lovely to see you all. Hey...........and what a storming gig as well, eh? Echo the sentiments about the sound quality - it worked well downstairs as well.

Munch - thanks for the cd's.
Denis - thanks for the lift, much appreciated. Shame about the bloody wait to leave the car park though!
Adrian - Thanks for the great pics as a momento and the setlist, I couldn't remember them all either. (Any chance you could email them to me?).
Mrs Lontano - Thanks for the lovely birthday story! Winker Romance isn't dead yet!!! LOL!

I look forward to meeting up with you all again sometime soon. Take care all.

Sorry I missed you all last night, in particular, appologies to Denis and Mark.

We arrived lateish and joined the queue straight away - then the lure of the tee-shirt stand - it took a lot longer than I would have thought possible - inefficient or what!

Great gig though - it was quite cool downstairs - I didn't even have to take my fleece off! Didn't think much of the support band - whoever they were. The third song was ok but the rest were dreadful.

After Steve Wilson said about playing things earlier than In Absentia then playing Stars Die (a personal favourite) I hoped that they would play some more of the older songs but PT have such a good back catalogue it doesn't really matter what they played.

AnaesthatiZe was good as was Sleep Together, a wonderful end to a gig.

Anesthetize was the highlight for me, I love the way it changes within the song to become almost three seperate songs.

It was my highlight as well. Mrs Lontano had a big cheesy grin throughout that track - she likes the heavy riffs! Halo was her favourite though. Sleep Together is a great closing track as well. Normal was an excellent start as well. They are all good really. Winker Can't wait for the DVD.

Shame you and Mario were not here. We had a good night out. They are touring again in a year, we hope, so maybe next time.

It was a pleasure to meet Mark and and the rest of the Naim PT Street Crew - BigH, Mrs BigH, Mike (friend of Munch), Munch, Lontano, Mrs Lontano, Mrs Tonym, Tonym Smile

I'm sorry I didn't meet Seagull & Malcolm, especially after finding a 4 year old forum picture to assist. Maybe we can make it at next years gig for the new album. Then again, SW may venture out to promote Insurgentes or Blackfield or no-man.

Favourites for me were - Stars Die, Anaesthetize, Strip The Soul / .3, Way Out Of Here, Sleep Together & Fear Of A Blank Planet. Gavin's drumming at the end of part 2 of annies thighs along with the blinding strobe lights was really LOUD ART.

Not sure if people know this but "Way Out Of Here" was inspired by the death of a young fan and yesterday would of been her birthday. Steven had mentioned that her parents were going to attend the show from the US; don't know if they did? The video was not shown in the US when they first toured FOABP.

On leaving the Car Park, Mark and I had plenty of time to solve middle east issues, the financial turmoil and larf about spurs. Oh, and he told me that he had seen The Cure recently and they played for 3 1/2 hours. Now that's what I call a VFM gig and may we should lobby PT to do the same. I'd rather that than listen to Support acts like "Oceansize" from last night or "Amplifier" who Scottyhammer can attest were Chest Thumpingly LOUD.

Adrian, great photos and look forward to meeting you and Jane again.

SW blew his voice after last nights gig so what would he be like after 3.5 hours?
Great pics Adrian.

What's he doing here though?

Ah a very flattering picture. Looks like I am surfing the web whilst waiting for the band to come on. Couldn't get on the Naim forun easily so that one looks like the ECM forum, another haunt of mine.

Here's a video interview with Steven Wilson at Hardsound TV. It was filmed in Lisbon, Portugal on 7th October.

Here's a review from the Planet Rock website this morning.
Posted on: 21 October 2008 by Lontano
Thanks Denis.

That review is spot on. Sometimes you go to a show and then think the reviewer went to a different one. This reviewer went to the same one as me. Excellent summary.
Posted on: 21 October 2008 by Lontano
Thanks for the interview link Denis. I just watched it and thought it was very good. He talked about all the different music he likes to listen to and I think it shows in the diversity of projects he is involved in.

I'm not ashamed. We've all got our little interests; what's so bad about women's clothing?

Looks like we had a lucky escape - we were right behind you for a while until Mags decided the next queue along appeared to be moving an inch an hour faster so she moved over! Sorry Mike... Frown

Not sure which car park we were in but straight out 5 or 6 cars ahead of us. Lontano should know which C/P after all he was driving. Winker
