Intro2 + 200 or Allea

Posted by: ncartwright on 13 March 2003

My current set up is a 202+PSC/150 with CD5 and Sondek as sources. My speakers are old and not in the same league as the rest of the system. I am therefore looking at the next upgrade.

With a tight budget due to a recent house move I need to decide on the best course of action. I would like to replace the speakers with the Allea's but this would require holding off for a year but I could afford the Intros now and perhaps add a 200 or Hicap at a later date.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

if the room is forgiving then you can get bass and overall full sound from the Allae with the 150. If it isnt it'll sound thin and anaemic even with the speakers near the wall.

If that doesnt work out then Intro will give a more even frequency balance.

Try in the long run to get a 200 amp, regardless. There is so much dimensionality in the Reference Series that the 150 cannot give.

If the LP12 is too slow for the new naims we'll talk about it then Smile

I would say that whether you replace the speakers or not your best upgrade is going to be a power supply for the CD5. Either a hi-cap ora flat-cap. There should be plenty of second hand models on the market with everyone upgrading to the new range.

I would say get used to the new house and its characteristics before replacing the speakers.

Thanks Vik,

I think your thoughts roughly line up with mine. The room is 5.8m X 3.6m and due to domestic requirments I am listening to the speakers across the width of the room. Judging by the change in sound between my old room and this one I think that the Allae's will require at least a 200 driving them.

A home trial should confirm this but I suspect the Intro's followed by a 200 will be the best bet. I should also be able to find the cash to add a flat cap as NB suggests.

Perhaps by then cash flow will have inproved enough to look at the Allaes
