Email hosting and a grump

Posted by: Mike Hughes on 10 December 2006

Okay first problem. I have just moved to a decent speed broadband, which is great, but my ISP email is non-existent. I would like to continue to use Outlook as a client but I am moving toward buying my own domain and getting it hosted. So, anybody able to reccommend some decent, cheap hosting for someone in the Manchester area?

Secondly, a grump. Naim, this site works beautifully to view in Firefox but whenever you want to post something you have to use IE tab or IE itself. This is the 21st century. Could it be sorted please?

I use Firefox and have no problems posting. Are you using the up to date Firefox?

Yes, that is weird. I have used nothing but Firefox on this forum since a couple of months after joining.

Yup, I am using FF 2.0. I can do a quick reply but not a full one.

I have a domain with Nameroute which I don't do a lot with, but it seems to work fine and is cheap.

Have a look at Black Cat Networks too, not as cheap but they seem well regarded.

Most domain name registrars will do basic email forwarding, so if your ISP provides email but you're the highly memorable ag23xhg@isp.co.uk you could simply register a domain name and get it forwarded.

Re Firefox - It must be something turned off in Firefox, probably in tools - options. I seem to remember turning Java off and not being able to do anything on this forum. See if Javascript and Java are enabled. Just a thought.

Re Hosting. Nowadays this is very much a host anywhere business. As others have suggested I would register a domain and then host it somewhere (you might try SiteHQ who offer 100mb of space and 50 pop accounts for £30 per year), then forward all e-mails from your ISP to your brand spanking e-mail address.

Or of course you could host it yourself ... no too much beer too early in the evening!
