So farewell then, you murdering torturing fascist scumbag

Posted by: Kevin-W on 11 December 2006

A pity Pinochet never managed to stand trial for his various misdemeanours, which included the murder of thousands, as well as the sacrifice of the freedoms of an entire nation on the altar of CIA-supported anti-communism and free market economics. As well as being a torturer, tax evader, coke smuggler, arms dealer and miracle worker (he recovered from numerous terminal ailments).

Thatcher was a big supporter of his too, as her excruciating, fawning appearance when he was under house arrest in the UK back in '98.

I always knew she was a malignant old bat, and we can see that by the company she kept.

Systematic kidnap, torture and murder of 1000's of opponents do not a few faults make.
The title of the thread stands as accurate.

You call that response a sensible argument ?

Even Mr Pig could do better than that.

Mick,

Well it made me laugh. Heres another:

President Bush seeks advice on iraq from a host of top advisors including Britain's Mick parry

Fools like you make me wonder if this forum is really worth bothering with any more.

You have reduced it to the level of a school playground.

Mick,

I know you can take a joke in good spirit. I know I can.

All the best,

Acad

A joke is supposed to be funny and that was not even funny or witty. It was just plain tat.

People like you ruin places like this.

You mentioned that Pinochet had a few faults. Would you care to name some of them?

I am not answering any more questions or making any more comments on this subject because I am fed up with some of the idiotic responses.

Big Grin

He never remembered his mum's birthday.

Mick,

If this country ever needed the likes of Pinochet in an hour of need (which it never has) we would have been in big trub.

Or is this some kind of Orwellian gag - Castro bad, Pinochet good but a few bad points?

Come on, the man murdered his opposition and sanctioned all kinds of atrocities while plundering his country for him and his henchmen.

If that gets you even qualified support - God help us.

Steve.

Mick

I asked you the question because I felt that your response was very close to idiotic. I thought you'd appreciate a chance to clear up the impression that you were minimising the extraordinary brutality of Pinochet against his own people.

Mick,

I had no idea you were so sensitive. I doubt you would have held up against Pinochet's torture thugs for more than a few seconds.

This is a rather sad and hypocritical thread. You wade in like some pompous do gooders criticising Pinochet.

Whatever his faults and he had a few, he was a good friend to this country in time of need.

Of course, now that you have slagged him off, you can all claim to be kind and loving human beings.

To me it stinks of hypocracy.

Rather sad really.

Mick

First of all, it's spelt hypocrisy.

Secondly the fact that he was supposedly a "friend" to this country in "time of need" is both immaterial and most definitely a NOT cause for celebration. A vile murdering scumbag is a vile murdering scumbag, and your good mate Thatch destroyed what little was left of her reputation with her disgraceful display back in '98.

Remember that Stalin - a figure I doubt whether you'd support - was a friend to this country in it true hour of need (the Second World War, rather than the Falklands, a fairly minor spat which the great writer Borges once memorably compared to two bald men fighting over a comb)

Thirdly, I was once commissioned to write a piece on victims of torture and repression in South American dictatorships, and had to interview a number of kindly old Pinochet's (as well as Galtieri's and Somoza's, etc)victims. Having heard the testimony of those who experienced his brutality first-hand I feel quite angry and, like many other people, was quite happy to see the back of the old bastard.

You also seem to have conveniently forgotten that some of Pinochet's victims were also British citizens.

Some friend, huh?

I often wonder if this "blimpish old buffer" image you like to project actually conceals something rather more unpleasant. You also seem to be completely unwilling to move from your "I'm the voice of robust right-of-centre common sense" position on anything. Whether or not it's from stubborn pride or sheer stupidity, I don't know.
