Glastonbury as good as ever

Im nursing a sore head after another fantastic Glasto. The whole event was packed full of brilliant music from start to finish.

The best musicalmoments for me were:

The Kills - this two piece really rock and the singer has incredible stage presence as well as being drop dead gorgeous. They sound like a cross between the white stripes/ the cramps and pj harvey. Great stuff.

LCD sound system - A brilliant amalgamation of sounds, explosive percussion, a really tight band and great big electronic bass lines made for a thrilling set full of energy - the crowd went bonkers.

The white stripes and the Killers both produced high quality sets which captured the massive Pyramid crowd attention. Combined they set the mood for friday night. Coldplay delivered a polished set that was completed by a nice Kylie cover which met with full crowd approval.

The chemical brothers, 2 many dj's and Timo Mass had the dance crowds going suitably barmy. This whole dance area of Glastonbury has improved massively this year with more variety and better overall dance music quality.

G LOve and the special sauce offered a sunny vibe on the Jazz stage and Roisin Murphy (with Herbert) proved that there is life beyond Moloko with some really good new material.

Secret machines were a new band full of energy and have a guitarist who has been watching plenty of Pete Townsend footage.

MIA delivered a set of hip hop tunes to a very expectant crowd. Big beats but with a very 'british' sound which is a good thing.

Finally, coming across The Beat at 4 on Monday morning at Lost Vageuness was a great find. Doing a 'rude boy' shuffle whilst listening to tears of a clown and Rankin full stop was a great way to say goodbye.

All in all the event was a great showcase for emerging talent as well as consolodating the reputation of bands like Bloc Party, Kaiser chiefs etc etc.

I could write a list about all the bands that I would love to have seen but never managed because Glasto offers so much more beyond just the music. But then that level of diversity combined with an unbelievable spirit is what makes this festival the best in the World. Two years is a long wait.

Did everybody get old all of a sudden?

It used to be the case that some forum posters actually went to the festival as opposed to just sitting in front of their plasma's watching only the commercial acts on bbc3. This year it appears not.

Simon, it's nothing tto do with age. I would have done anything to have been there, rather than just watching it on my 10-year old Hitachi non-plasma telly. But I couldn't get a ticket. Simple as that!

The same applied in 1998, 2002, 2003 and last year.

Kevin - sorry if I sounded a bit cynical. Ticket allocation is indeed a nightmare and I was bloody lucky this year. I hope you get more luck in 07, get on broadband and keep trying from the moment they open. Did you get to 99 then?

As regards to age, my comment was lazy also. Nobody is getting any younger, myself included, but Glasto is great at making any age group welcome. I was surprised, however, that nobody from the forum seems to have gone this year. There is no greater opportunity to see soo much good live music in one location than this festival.

I went this year! and the previous 3 years...
and id agree with you Simon it was as good as ever, mud or no mud!!!

For me the best musical moment had to be The Magic Numbers in the John Peel (formerly New Bands) Tent. They literally took the roof off! It was one of the most electric gigs ive experienced for a long time.

Plenty of other good moments too, some of which were inevitably enhanced by the Cider Bus! I particularly enjoyed both the Kaiser Cheifs and The Zutons.

Regards

The killers and the Stripes were great, but Coldplay were too polished for my liking so i went to see the Razorlights instead. They werent as edgy as i thought they might be but still enjoyable...

Seconded! The Dance tent had grown into a whole Dance Village! It just has to be experienced!!!

Hawk - Glad that your thoughts are very similar. I wanted to see Razerlight but went with the wishes of the two friends with me who really wanted to see coldplay.

I think that the John Peel stage just consistently delivered all throughout the festival. It was a shame that many of the bands performing were not filmed or broadcast.

What were the other highlights for you, musical or non-musical? Did you see the stooped man wearing a hat who was running around the stone circle area with a brief case playing creepy music? He was seriously disturbing!!!!

Did anybody see Brian Wilson? Reviews all over the place suggest he stole the show although I can't really comment as I only saw a couple of minutes of Good Vibrations and the TV sound wasn't that great.

Simon,

There were lots of moments that are slowly comming back to me! I missed the stooped man, but did come across the man in the box and the musical tree! as well as the naked mud wrestling...

Musically, i also saw Thirteen Senses who were ok, and i saw the mad performance by the bravery when the guitarist ended up playing naked on stage after some crowd surfing!

Tom,

I only saw a bit of Brian Wilson and IMO from a technical POV the performance wasnt great at all.. BUT the crowd had alot of respect for him and IMO thats what made it. Its one of those things that happens at Glasto, if the crowd are on side then it will make the gig. If you are asking me if i think he stole the show though, then id say probably not... no more than say the Killers did for example..

Cheers

Hawk - I picked up the magic numbers album yesterday and absolutely love it - just kicking myself that I missed them. They are playing the cross central festival (along with Grace Jones) at kings cross on August bank holiday, I think I'm going to make that a date.

The Kills and LCD soundsystem were the big surprises for me.

Still recovering...... Roll Eyes

Glad you liked it, I might give the LCD Soundsystem album a try too.

I'm probably going to be contraversial here......

On the whole, having viewed Glasto on TV, I thought that pretty well ALL of the acts were abismal - couldn't sing, and tightness didn't feature at all.

Talent has never been lower IMHO.

I would have been embarrassed to play live at the level of musicianship that I saw on the whole..............

It's time for some real talent and people who can REALLY play and sing.

Seeing it on the telly obviously doesn't truly catch the atmosphere, however, none of the live acts could really sing or play - a few lessons might help.......... Come on, is this really the best we can offer????????

Trying to get glasto via the telly is like trying to watch a 3D movie without the funny glasses!

All i can say is it sounded a whole lot better there thanks to the cider bus Winker

I can't agree in general with your opinions regarding the quality of music on offer at Glasto

Having been a Glasto regular for over ten years, I would have to say that the quality of music has improved in the last few of years and some of the bands sounded fantastic when heard LIVE.

I can understand that you may have been underwhelmed by some of the acts but all of them?? Even if you don't like them are you saying that you think the White Stripes, killers can't play???
