Polish Vodka?

Dear Friends,

How would you describe the taste of Polish Vodka?

At 44 I have never tasted Vodka of any origin before, but today I was given a bottle of Pan Tadeusz, which is one of the classics of its type from Poland according to my friend and work collegue who just returnrned from a holiday with his familly. A very nice gift and a very nice drink. I only put an inch into a very small glass, but it tastes like nothing I have tried before, the strongest of which was of course Aquavit.

The point is I have no idea how to describe the taste, but it is smooth, which has surprised me. I expected firewater, to be honest!

All the best from Fredrik

Indeed. Was he crippled by love, insecurity, jealousy? Was he crippled at all?

Noble, perhaps but that trait has more often than not been placed rather than earned.

I visit the music forum too infrequently. Would you suggest something by Haydn that echos our brief discussion here?

Yes, and very easily.

Two late works, both apparently sunny in overal disposition, and both with very short heart rendingly sad moments, totally encompassed by the joy in seeing kindness in life as well.

The Te Deum Laudamus, which reminds me I found a superb Vienna Boys Choir Youtube, which I will post now in a minute in the Great Music Unarranged thread, and the Symphony Number 103, "The Drum Roll" which has an apparently easy Second Movement which veers into the area of Tchailowskian tragedy without ever touching on self-pit - mind Piotr Ilych did not either, only rotten performances make it so[!] - and yet returns with a wiser smile on its face before the joi di vivre of the rest!

I so want people to know these great Haydn works, so generous in spirit, so noble in message!

George

PS: I might be on the lash juice, but I can still navigate well enough to use spell check in MS Word, and drive Youtube!

Symphony Number 103, "The drum Roll"

It changes like the long light of summer of and the long shadows of winter.

Only 17:02 here in Vancouver, Canada so I'll have time to dig it up and out.

Cheers, George.

Always a pleasure,

Jim

Enjoy it! ATB from George

Hi George,

Yes, the Pan Tadeusz was the start of your "slippery slope"! I'll put it in the freezer when I get home, ready perhaps for Thursday. Winker

Dear Mark,

It would nicest with good apple juice in a separate glass, to do it justice, unlike my first attempt. Mind you I did prove it is rather nice [but devasting] without!

ATB from George

At the end this is what it did to me, but I did manage to get to work next next day!

I am now, on third listening, beginning to adore 103.

Thank you again,

Dear Jim,

Strange as it may sound it has long since been my favourite symphony, and not just by Haydn.

In the late eighties I was staying with my grandparents in Norway, and the symphony would not leave my head in any quiet moment for the whole fortnight. I came home and listened to it twice in a row before eating! Fortunately it left me alone for a while after that!

I have been mad for far longer than I have known Polish Wodka!

I am so glad you are enjoying it! George

Now I know how to do it properly!

I spoke to Frank earlier, and another Norwegian export will be with me later this week! A pack of Petterøe’s Blanding Nr 2. The nicest rolling tobbaco I have ever come across!

Thanks Frank, and enjoy the Aquavit. Save some for me!

I have been speaking to a charming Polish waitress in a pub (in Polish) and apparently she will be returning back to Poland because the Pound is too weak! I pleaded her to stay and she laughingly replied 'do something about your English economy and I will stay'. Its the first time I heard the above explanation, are we slipping in the economy of Europe?

Dear Romi,

"Are we slipping economy of Europe?" Look round you - look at house prices, and confidence in Mortgauge lending; look at inflation [the real inflation, not the government figure]; look at the Pound sterling compared to the Złoty, or any other European currency!

I don't think there is any doubt the economy is rebalancing downwards. We are all poorer than twelve months ago, except those getting double figure salary increases.

Dear George

Perhaps speaking the lingo I will go to Poland for employment. They do nice beer and vodka as a bonus...!

Something to put your heart into your mouth. This [almost catastrophic] jump at the Holmekollen Skyjump in Oslo [the second oldest in the world], by Polish Champ, Adam Małysz, secured his win!

Information here!

Nice to join up my one Norwegian half with my wish for the Polish to do well. My aunt and two cousins only live about two miles as the crow flies from the Holmenkollen, though several times that round the roads as the Skyjump is on the next Hill wersterly.

Does anyone remember Eddie the Eagle?

I don't know about apple juice, it's a new head I need today!

Dear Mark,

Sorry to smile, but even though I almost killed myself falling down the stairs after half a litre of Wyborowa [one litre shared between me and a mate] in half an hour, I have never had a headache from it!

Half a bottle of wine leaves me feeling ill for twenty four hours, though.

Try the juice thing, and some good Polish sausage helps as well, during the drinking, with plain bread!

The effect is not spoiled but you don't feel bad next day!

Get well soon! ATB from George
