Polish Vodka?

Dear Friends,

How would you describe the taste of Polish Vodka?

At 44 I have never tasted Vodka of any origin before, but today I was given a bottle of Pan Tadeusz, which is one of the classics of its type from Poland according to my friend and work collegue who just returnrned from a holiday with his familly. A very nice gift and a very nice drink. I only put an inch into a very small glass, but it tastes like nothing I have tried before, the strongest of which was of course Aquavit.

The point is I have no idea how to describe the taste, but it is smooth, which has surprised me. I expected firewater, to be honest!

All the best from Fredrik

Not Polish, but Russian vodka - did anyone see the programme on BBC2 last night about bootleg vodka being made with a mdical/industrial spirit based disinfectant ? It turns people yellow and their organs disintergrate - a nasty death.

In my experience you would be better trusting Polish people to make Wadka!

Well, it might have been an excuse for a party for some, but not for me.

I am now a fully fledged UB40 case, though I hope it will not last long. They were very kind to me at the Job Centre actually, but I guess they do not get many people just like me as "clients!" The lady immediately said she thought I was not a local [Worcester] person, and straight away we had something in common - both being Herefordians! Nice start... It took ages, though I was allowed a little privacy as well! Actually the lady was very sympathetic over the work situation, and surprised by my lack of rancour about it!

Perhaps it is time to look further afield in UK before my planned departure from these noble shores. Norfolk looks appealing...

Dear Friends,

I had the experience of a first revisitation to the "Office." I apologise for anyone who saw my blinding response to that on Friday evening. There was absolutely nothing about the reaction to that which was Polish however, and fortunately some kind moderator has gently removed it. Thanks, and apologies. I fear I lost the plot fairly spectacularly that evening. Sorry...

However I now have one very good lead, which is in a direction I had not seen for myself. You can bet if it works out, there will be a much happier reaction. I had spent a week, totally going down mentally over the whole situation before the visit, and like a tightly coiled spring I simply let go afterwards, even though it was positive in the event - the tension before hand had become nigh unbearable...

Easter Sunday evening... Much beer, and then a bottle of Zubrowka! I woke up with a very stiff neck, having slept in the chair, and was not yet quite sober! Fantastic Party! Four people in the same state!

Zybrowka [Bison Wodka]is nigh undrinkable without fruit juice, unlike Wyborowa, but with it, it produced no headache! In fact it cured one very quickly...

Dear Beano,

No tarmac or concrete here!

The brief was to make it possible to plant the little patch in the style of a "cottage garden." I am sure the planting will reflect that. For sure I put a weed screen under the gravel, as I have always thought that weeding gravel is a complete waste of time! The time to spend fiddling with that sort of thing is only a luxury which can be enjoyed by those who don't have to go out and work.

It will be my pleasure to watch the garden grow occasionally from now on. It is s lovely spot.

Kindest regards from Fredrik.

Dear Friends,

What is it about Airports - or more specifcally about partings in them?

Too many times I have seen dear people for the very last time in Airports... So that I dread doing the favour of dropping someone off in one.

I did so on Friday, one of my two old Polish collegues from Conserve days, amd as ever I was not in good condition driving out of the car-park and I am sure not entirely safe till I had the motor bowling down the M42. Strange isn't it? My two favourite people in the world, my late Norwegians grandparents, I last saw getting onto a plane, and both times I had that gut wrenching feeling that this was "Adieu!". Even when there is no reason to think so sadly I cannot seem to rid myself of this bit of conditioning.

I almost got some Spiritus imported, but the idea was thought too risky! Too much can make you blind!

Forgot to mention something even nicer than the bottle of Bols which came hot-foot from Poland today. I was given a proper engine driver's hat in khaki heavy cotton, which will protect my balding pate from the sun and rain in all seasons!

So much nicer than a baseball cap, and less formal than a dear stalker!

Getting slightly sloshed mesen this evening on account of the poor Wasps result at Leicester today and missing out on the play off semi finals. Nice bottle of red as usual to do the trick.

Note to self, "Don't go on Ebay or the Peter Belt site!"

Dear Fredrik

Wonderful, as always, to talk to you, being as you are, one of this forum's shining lights. My good friend, you always come over as a kind and generous human being and long may you spread your goodwill and gentle nature among us all.

You are quite right, I have fallen foul of that particular trap before, but tonight I am buying nothing!

My very best regards from amidst my besloshed demeanour

Just to add that I was not expecting Spiritus. It was not actually, as it was duly diluted by 25% water and 25% pure fresh lemon juice. I have yet to find a more entrancing drink which does not kill you! Needless to say we went to the pub after...

Fred

PS: There is going to be one hell of a party in or near Krakow one of these months, because my friends want to see "me" under the table, which apart from an accident on the stairs one day last year has been not remotely on the stocks so far...!

Just to say that tomorrow is going to be intersting. I just cracked another bottle - the reserved tank - as I am thinking deeply...

Holst's Saint Paul Suite from my very last concert playing is contributing to a feeling that one has to think hard about doing the right thing by others - maybe that involves pushing them a bit...
