Equipment Positioning ?

Hi All,
I had always had my equipment on it's rack in the following order (top to bottom) LP12 on wall shelf, CDX/82/Hi/140 with the Lingo and NAPSC sitting away from the rest of the equipment. I hadn't really considered changing things round as I didn't imagine there would be any real benefits.
Anyway, yesterday I decided to remove all the equipment in order to clean all of the shelves properly (Ash stand), and when I was putting everything back I decided to see if there was any benefit in moving the Hicap and 140 further away from the 82 by changing the order to 82/CDX/140/Hicap.
Frankly, I was shocked by the improvement, and didn't realise how much effect the 140/Hi was having on the 82 (I'm assuming they are both to blame to a greater or lesser degree) The whole sound has opened up and is much more involving, and I am in fact having difficulty describing the improvements in simple terms as everything seems to have improved, bass is deeper, treble crisper, soundstage deeper.
I know this all sounds a bit OTT, and probably obvious to many, but I'm pissed off that I haven't tried this before, as it's such a simple thing that wouldn't have cost a penny. I think I was in the 'source at the top' way of thinking, assuming that this should have been the box furthest away from likely sources of interference, which I had thought would be the Lingo and NAPSC anyway.
By the way, all the equipment has been disconnected recently, so cleaning of the contact surfaces of connections wasn't an issue.
Anyone else had similar experiences?
