Better sound with unclosed CD tray?
Posted by: Bobber on 08 April 2009
hi there,
i once followed the "foolish" tip of a naim enthusiast who recommended not to close the cd tray of naim cdp completely. a small gap between tray (1-2 mm) and the main housing would protect the tray from vibrations occured by the rest of the player referring back on the laser unit. this cheap trick should definitely be heard.
has this phenomenon been discussed or confirmed in the forum in the past already? i myself have surely noticed a slight but obvious improvement in sound (more room, wider stage) with this way of listening with my cd5/hicap and listen for years in this way only.
i expect my 2nd hand cdx2 every day now. can i expect this effect with that cdp too? what are your experiences and theories?
cheers!

Real CD-players use a lid.
FYI, I tried that on a CDX and didn't noticed any differences.

After you get a Naim, you should get a LIFE!
Fully shut the bloody thing and enjoy the music as famously said here sometimes.

Then your point is....... Are you just looking for confirmation, from the Forum, of what you have heard with your own ears?
You said others have experienced this as well. What more do you need?
Sorry you didn't get the answer you were looking for...

Hmmm...Have you tried giving the door a good firm slamming, that might improve the sound further?

Funny, but every thing in my CDS3 is isolated from the main housing.
The CD transport and logic boards are all on floating leaf springs.

My dealer told me to leave it open just like 1-2mm.
Did it ever since.

Now, seriously....
Why would a NAIM-dealer advice to leave it open a bit???
He too said something about reducing vibrations....
Adam???

Cool topic!
Bobber, have you tried keep your Naim CD player in the fridge before a playing session This really enhance the sound. CD5i into C555 territory!

Wow, I am new to this forum and was hoping it to prove useful. But after reading threads like this it is hard to believe that to be the case.
wether or not you guys think the op has merit is irrelevant. You guys come off as big assholes.

I can live with that, most of my favourite people have been accused of being assholes. But again, there is some discussion here, but some wit as well.
...we've all got one tho.

The question was really stupid. In the first line of this thread was the word'foolish' and that's exactly what it is. If Naim thought leaving the drawer open improved the sound then they have a waste in R+D
Your language is best kept off this forum and sometimes I think people have nothing better to do than write stupid threads....

This forum is so incredibly useful that I'm sure the OP can enjoy a little humor (unless he's German) as replies come in. Personally I'd love to know too!
I've only seen a Naim tray one brief time and thought it was slightly magnetic at the point the door closed, so I can only imagine this working with say a little cotton wool? Not that I'm at the stage of being able to try it out.

Why is this any more foolish than the lengthy threads about arranging boxes on a Fraim, or massaging one's hi-line? For the record, all seem equally foolish to me - there comes a point when one has to stop faffing around, sit back and enjoy the music.

the British humor is becoming International just like the British food.
anyway, i did try leaving a gap on my CD5i but for some reason everytime before i pop back to my seats to listne i pushed it back in thinking that is silly leaving a gap.
I was thinking :
what if it sounded better? would it be 1mm or 2mm or 1.1mm or 1.2mm or 1.3mm or 0,23449mm
how do i make sure it is the best gap everytime? and is it related to the weight of the CDs?
so i said to myself just shut it and listen.
hm..may be i try again tonight and report back
