Too much alchohol

Steady on James, this is a thread on the "units" we are supposed to be watching.*
My wife saw a programme on TV yesterday about drinking at home and how bad it's going to be for us if we are the types of people who drink a couple of beers or a couple of glasses of wine every night. I do. I'm guessing we all do. I work pretty hard and long hours and I bloody well deserve a couple of beers or some red wine in the evening - I don't get to sit down until around 9.30 most evenings!!
Is this a load of crap or should we really take notice of this?
*Yeah, I guess it didn't do Rory any good.

Yes Mark. Been back to the Philippines. SWMBO and I got hitched.
Very impressed with Singapore Airlines - best airline food and wine I have ever had and stunningly beautiful air hostesses.

Speaking with a little knowledge here, as I did ulimately have to admit that I was powerless over alcohol and that my life had become unmanagable. I never get preachy about this stuff because it is perdonal to each and every one of us, but being honest about the problem was the first step in what has proved to be an amazing journey for me. My life without alcohol is incomparably better than what went before and I do not miss it one little bit. It helps to know that if I do pick up again it will eventually kill me, and I'm not ready to go yet. So much music to hear, so little time!

Sadly, sobriety hasn't improved my typing!

Chateau Lescure 2000, Saint Emilion grand cru*.
Cheers.

Too much moderation causes an excess deficiency.

Excess deprivation is doing me no harm!

Never heard of the wine, but 2000 is pretty good for reds in St Emilion (and indeed in the whole of Bordeaux).
It's a boring mantra, but drinking in moderation is good for you. Just stay away from the industrial slop and drink tasty drinks (real ales, nice wine). You'll drink less of it, and enjoy it more.
Oh, and lots of water too.

Ray,
I didn't know it either. It cost something between 10 and 12 euro. Fair price. Think I'll hold off the other two bottles for a while.

Alexander,
I'd give them another 3 years or so. For a wine of that cost, there's a lovely drinking window which centres around the 10 year mark. Obviously with better (usually more expensive) wines, that window increases. I'm just starting to broach my 1985 Canon La Gaffeliere bottles!

Funny how this thread has kinda turned around somewhat...

Speaks volumes doesn't it!
I've a 1999 bottle of Penfolds Grange that I'm trying to keep for another 12 years, by which time it'll probably be too valuable to drink!!
After a week I'm fairly surprised at my total intake of units. I've found that if I crack open a can of beer I usually have one, and even with company I really only have 3 maximum (cans), so my consumption for the week at 1 can = 1.5 units is around 15. Maybe it's a case of if you're aware of it, it isn't a problem. I remember asking the midwife something when my first daughter was born, and she only answered "because you've asked that question, I know you'll be okay". I guess it might amount to the same thing.

Then again, perhaps, if you don't really have a problem, you'd never think to ask the question.

Trust me, you'll know if you have a problem. Whether or not you admit it is something else again.
