The death has been announced of Sir Edward Downes and his wife in Switzerland.
He may have had a lower profile than some of his contempoaraies, but reading the Daily Telegraph link will soon dispel any doubts about his significance as a conductor and a musician of huge integrity.

I went to two of his concerts - both times of the same programme [a fortnight apart] including the Berg Violin concerto and Elgar's Second Symphony. The BBC Philharmonic [formerly Northern Symphony] Orchestra played at a Prom and then Worcester Cathedral. I still have a tape recording [transfered to CD] of the Proms Elgar Symphony performance. Unparalleled. A few year later Naxos would make a commercial recording with Downes and the BBC Philharmonic in the work. Still arguably the finest on records.
