n-Vi speaker outputs

Posted by: PeterZ on 16 November 2005

Looking at the back of the n-Vi (see this link), it seems that the orientation of the speaker outputs is such that the standard Naim plugs will not work. It's just too tight back there.

What kind of plugs are required to connect speakers to an n-Vi? Or am I missing something and regular Naim plugs will work? By regular I mean the kind that come with the Naim power amps.

When i saw a dem of the n-vi a couple of weeks ago,i spotted some new speaker connectors being wired up and asked about them, apparently they are a different size i.e the pins are closer together. The reason for my interest was that i hoped they would fit on to the back of my 250, as they dont bend the cable at a 90 degree angle as the normal Naim speaker connectors do,which would have made them ideal for my setup.

Still reckon amp/speaker connectors made in the same material and style as the n-vi connectors would be well useful for anyone not using Fraim.

Judging form the back panel pics, it appears that NAIM are going to supply the speaker plugs with the box, is this correct? As NAIM already supply speaker plugs with their amplification.

So if this is are new plugs then it may mean that amp plug are not interchangable with this new box.

Mike, if the pins are closer together, would that not prevent use on the older amps? It's the spacing that is critical if I'm not mistaken.

As for the 90 degree angle, have you tried plugging the speaker cable in upside down? ie. the cable loops down from above the amp. I find this works just fine on my non Fraim rack and does not stress the cable at all.

Getting back to the original question, any one know what the new plugs look like? Any picutes?

Peter,
Yes it does prevent use of the new plug on other equipment. The point i was making was that the new plug would be ideal to use on amps, but because the pin spacing is unique to the n-vi, you can`t.

Its difficult to explain without actually seeing the plug, but one of the same design, with normal pin spacing would be ideal. When i suggested this to the Naim chap who was doing the wiring, he didnt think it was very likely to happen.
