How do you order fish and chips?
Posted by: Aiken Drum on 14 October 2005
In my youth in the North East, I would ask for a paper, in rural Shropshire it was "once", "twice" etc. Over here you ask for a fish supper.
How do you ask for your fish and chips in your favourite chippy?

"A love story"? I haven't seen it I'm afraid.
Was it dubbed into tysk as usual? The buggers have never heard of subtitles. Must be a lot of illiterate tyskers about.
Aren't you a bit off your usual patch? You're certainly well off topic...

'Now then' seems to work. A bag of scraps may be added. 'Fish in a teacake' gets an odd look in the South but is fine here.

Scrumps were free at our village chipshop in a tiny Cumbrian village when miners still wore clogs and walked down the middle of the road on their way home in black and white. Well mostly black in their case.

"The usual, Kevin".

It's a "Fish Supper" round here. A good friend (who weighs in at around 26 stone) often orders a "Pie supper with a chips chaser". In English this translates to "Pie and chips with an extra portion of chips".
Is it any wonder that chips are known as "Glasgow Salad"?

It's a "fish supper" here as well. The difference with the east coast though is that if you're not careful you'll get it drenched in brown sauce.

My girlfriend always asks for "a poke of chips" which never fails to amuse both me and the Chippy staff whereever we go. I think it must be a Stockport thing from her youth.

"Haddock, chips, largy mushy peas and a can of coke please."
"Anything else?"
"Oh, a plastic fork, please."
In Scotland I asked for fish supper twice and two bottles of Beck's. They asked me if I wanted two fish suppers. Doh!
Effectively I twice had to ask in order to get a fish supper for me and my mate.

Two Meal Deals pls.
A meal deal at our F&C shop "Chez Fred" [I know, I know but Max Bygraves eats there so what do you expect] in Westbourne is a regular cod and chips with mushy peas. I hasten to add that despite the name this is the best F&C shop in the South West, it only gets seriously better at Faulkener's in Kingsland Road - but then that IS the best in the country.

Living outside Fife, you're all missing out on the red pudding supper. And ouside Scotland, your missing out on the black pudding supper and the white pudding supper.
All ideal fare on returning from the pub at night.

Normally, we would ask for two fish suppers and two Beck's.............. then you get what you asked for
Bob - know what you mean about the Red Supper

Cod & Chips please tends to work well here.
(stating cod tends to rule out the plethora of other 'things' available.. like deep fried mars bars in batter......)
If I'm feeling adventurous I may also ask for a squirt of garlic mayo as well.

Abject apologies. I've been away far too long. Incredible as it may seem, I completely forgot the haggis supper.

I went into my local chippy last night and said "Fish & chips twice, please". The man behind the counter said "It's OK I heard you the first time"
