Earth loop eliminator between processor/NAIT - how to use???

Posted by: domfjbrown on 13 October 2003

I was fiddling with my hifi/av last week and discovered I have an earth loop (even though I'd never noticed hum). If I turned the volume right up on either the tuner or video input I was getting 50hz hum - well, it's not even hum per se, more like a 50hz high freqency ticking sound - and you need the wick RIGHT up to hear it)...

Now, I tried unplugging the TV from the mains AND unplugging the aerial from the VCR, and this stopped the hum, but I'm not doing that every time I want to use the system, so I decided to get an earth loop eliminator, as used in cars (it was bought in a car accessories shop for an EXTORTIONATE £25 this Saturday!!!) and try it out.

Result - the hum gets FAR WORSE with the eliminator in line between the DD/DPL/DTS av processor (Yamaha E800) and the NAIT!! Errrm, ok...

The tuner is fine now - I'm using my old slightly pants "rabbit ears" style FM as the place is rented, so no option for a decent aerial.

Has anyone got any ideas? It says on the instructions for the eliminator that "if the sound is noticeably reduced in volome, ground the flying leads (on the eliminator) to the ground on the source" - I assume that means the AV processor, but if so, where to ground?

This really bugged me as I can't afford £25 right now on an ormanent - so if I can't get it to work, does anyone else want to buy it? Full guarantee/receipt/packaging included - the shop'll give me a credit note but I (physically) can't drive so car audio means &*$^£(*^$ to me!!!

Dom,
I have a hum between my DSPA-800 Yamaha processor and pre amp. I have to use a mayware at the pre amp end. I tried a earthy thing to cure this but it too made it worse.
I am hoping that an impending pre amp upgrade to a 282 and the ability to connect phono-phono will cure this, otherwise I'm stuffed.
You can actually get a device that goes on your aerial cable before it enters whatever and thats supposed to cure the buzz (according to my dealer). i am trying my local electrical shop to try this cure - If you need a result on this let me know...

Yep, that would be great Smile I too use a Maywire on the amp, but then I've used these with phonos on other sources from time to time with no hum problem, so I don't know what gives! I too think it's the aerial but I don't know HOW that can pass through all the phono connections of one system and then across to another... Crazy!

I suppose I could use that voucher to get some speakers; I could then rig up a cable from my Discman and have cycle-sound!
