Polishing scratches out of an LP12 lid...

Posted by: Boz on 01 July 2003

My bloody cleaner has managed to scratch my brand new LP12 plastic lid.

I know this is not strictly Naim but any forum members have any tips about polishing these out as they are just surface it seems.......someone has mentioned using toothpaste to do it but all sounds very odd.

Any suggestions guys and gals ?

Boz -

Might this be my old LP12 lid? I think you now own 'my' LP12. In which case that is a seriously shagged lid. Don't worry about it man.

PS how's it sounding?

Use "Brasso" for minor scratches - works a treat.

You might also try "T-Cut" - that can do the job too but Brasso is without a doubt my favourite.

Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

Well Redeye.. I have a cleaner too. Mine runs the vacuum cleaner into the bases of my SBL's which makes me MAD Mad
I had a party, years ago this was, when a very drunk girl fell against a very drunk bloke, and they both landed on my LP12, which then disappeared down through the Sound Organisation table it was sitting on, breaking the lugs off the frame. My.... how we laughed.. Eek Frown
Who's fault?...cue Zep song....(Damn. I can't .Turntable's busted) Anyone got any Brasso?

Rasher,
I had a nearly identical party accident (girl falls on boy falls on my hifi -- maybe the same pair?). In this case the victim was one of my 'Briks. The speaker fought back admirably however; 110 pounds of wood and welded steel can give it back as well as it can take it.

Boz,
If none of the other half-dozen helpful suggestions here works, Novus brand acrylic scratch remover (use the "light scratch" kind, #1, I think), will.

Have you contacted Linn?

I am sure that no matter how hard one tries, a dust cover will always end up with scratches.

Brasso is probably the best, alternatively (and don't laugh) the finest grades of wet and dry that are available.

When I was based in South Wales, we had a team of people polishing out the scratches on the inside of Phantom F4 (fast jet fighters - just in case) canopies. They often came to us with fairly significant scratches.
The process was to work up to the finest grade of W & D and then finish the job with plastic polish - Brasso will do. The litmus test was to get a pilot to confirm that any optical distortion that may occur was acceptable.

Friends of mine in the shop use Brasso for their LP12 lids. It works well but requires elbow grease.

Cleaners - hmmm, got a mate whose cleaner has just dinked the tweeter on one of his Dynaudio Audience 82s. It's going to cost £107 for a new one. The cleaner refused to accept it was their fault and told him he might've done it (yeah right)! I think the cleaner will be looking for a new job.

Regards,
Frank.

Not as bad as when my cleaner decided to dust the LP12 and I came home to find my 3 month old Dynavectors cantilever bent out of shape. As she was through a firm that had insurance (and made a great deal of this in thier adverts) I thought I would only lose the excess, but as she denied doing and they refused to pay up. So £350 down the drain, seems like the so called insurance is a bit of a scam Mad

To err is human; to really foul it up requires a computer.

I know the company that make the lids for the Garrard. They could do you a nice fluorescent orange!

Thanks for all your helpfull suggestions and as for redeye, well with a name like "redeye" 'nuff said :>Wink

Good news is yes the cleaner is getting the boot but that's basically 'cause she is crap !!

Tim, yes it sounds great...even better now that Infidelity have fitted a nice Lingo MK1 to it !! I had a new lid fitted when I bought it to replace the old one which is why I was pissed off that it was scratched like the mark of "zorro" 1 month later !!!!
