What is the best TV series box set

Posted by: Rockingdoc on 23 June 2010

I find great pleasure these days from long sessions watching complete sets of TV series which I have missed or overlooked. The complete Sopranos and The Wire won me over to this new way of watching, followed by West Wing. This has completely cured me of the real time waster of watching some rubbish program, just because it is on. My current favourite is Spooks, and I'm about to embark on the complete 24. I tried Lost, but didn't like it.
Any suggestions for TV box sets we should all investigate?
I got the Buffy suggestion in the other thread, but might wait until it drops below 100 quid.

p.s. I also have the complete Gerry Anderson and Roberta Leigh, but let's not go there.

But make sure you buy it off a dodgy market stall for ultimate authenticity!!

Six Feet Under. The Season one pilot is all you need to assess it's suitability for you. If you like it you won't find any subsequent season or episode lacking. Unlike the Sopranos which did have its high and lows, and Buffy which had its fair share of fillers. The concluding episode of the last season is not only a properly crafted ending to the whole arc but still stands out for me as the best 90 minutes of TV drama I've ever watched.

Sticking with Alan Ball but only by coincidence, I've hugely enjoyed the first two seasons of True Blood although I thought the second season fell back onto some well worn formulaic narratives already exploited skilfully by Joss Whedon - similar subject matter.

For something more left field, quirky, light weight and utterly charming, I recommend Due South. It's one of those seemingly simple series where you can nearly always see the next joke coming yet it draws you in.

For what that's worth. I could go on but I'll stop there.

Alan Bleasdales "The Street" or "Boys From The Blackstuff". Gizza Job.

Breaking Bad
Dexter

Stu, brilliant! Wish there were more. Tomkinson's Schooldays is still a favourite.

"Oh Lord, we give thee humble and hearty thanks for this, thy gift of discipline, knowing that it is only through the constraints of others that we come to know ourselves, and only through true misery can we find true contentment."

I might add the complete Fawlty Towers as a work of true genius that despite many repeat viewings, never fails to make me laugh out loud.

Currently watching

Sleeper Cell - series 1 excellent, series 2 - not so sure.

IMHO, Sleeper Cell season 2 was a steep drop off from season 1.

So far have watched 2 episodes from Season 2. Both episodes seem needlessly dragged out. Hope it picks up soon, but I suspect that it may not. They could quite easily have stopped with just one season, as most loose ends were tied up.

Rockingdoc - I would suggest you check out "Chuck" if you haven't done so already. I was given Season 1 as a Xmas present, and just got round to watching it a week or so ago. Enjoyed it so much I immediately ordered and watched Season 2. Just a a little p.o'd as I didn't realise that Season 3 had recently restarted on Virgin1, and I have missed episode 1.

I've thoroughly enjoyed Only Fools and Horses over many seasons/years and others I'm happy to recommend:

X-Files ... aggravating at times but watching the characters mature over the 9 seasons is most satisfying. Even the later seasons when David Duchovny went walkabout still worked for me. Add the two films, too, and you have many, many hours of viewing pleasure.

We now enjoy NCIS greatly and it's easy to get involved with the characters.

And, if you can find them, don't miss the three series of The Beiderbecke Collection ... certainly some of the best TV I've watched in nearly 50 years. And worthy of repeat, time and again.

House M.D.
Star Wars - The Clone Wars
Star Trek: TOS, TNG, VOY, DS9, ENT - in that order.

BBC:

Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy.

and

Smiley's People.

Le Carre, and Alec Guinness at a phenomenal octane. Slow burn, but inevitably clinching denouements.

ATB from George

PS: Faulty Towers is good for laugh as well ...

If you are OK with a certain amount of foul language and a significant element of sex with some nudity you might enjoy :

Which it soon becomes apparent is a sophisticated comedy of adult relationships. Obviously not 'family' viewing but very entertaining. If you enjoy it then there is a second season you can checkout aswell.

Totally agree with Thorsten about "House". So much so that I couldn't believe it took a whole page before it was mentioned. A great ensemble cast with Hugh Laurie as a flawed (anti) hero! To this you can add some brilliant one liners and the odd bit of hi-fi porn. Genius!

In addition to this and the OP's original suggestion of "The Wire" I would add "Deadwood"

Personally though I'd stop watching after they auction the watch ... I really think that would have been the perfect ending to this usually great series.
