What is the best TV series box set

Posted by: Rockingdoc on 23 June 2010

I find great pleasure these days from long sessions watching complete sets of TV series which I have missed or overlooked. The complete Sopranos and The Wire won me over to this new way of watching, followed by West Wing. This has completely cured me of the real time waster of watching some rubbish program, just because it is on. My current favourite is Spooks, and I'm about to embark on the complete 24. I tried Lost, but didn't like it.
Any suggestions for TV box sets we should all investigate?
I got the Buffy suggestion in the other thread, but might wait until it drops below 100 quid.

p.s. I also have the complete Gerry Anderson and Roberta Leigh, but let's not go there.

'A Very Peculiar Practice' - if you could buy it for a sensible price.

What WAS that all about? Bonkers but enjoyable.

Personally though I'd stop watching after they auction the watch ... I really think that would have been the perfect ending to this usually great series.

Yes, I'm tempted to agree.

I've enjoyed the subsequent episodes but none capture the essence of what went before. On a different level I also enjoyed the (so far) one-off prequel Rock and Chips broadcast early this year.

Agreed, we recall enjoying that first series; the second series less so.

Yes, I too have thing about Mary Louise Parker, but haven't seen Weeds on sale as a box-set yet. I was hoping it might appear on Virgin "TV Choice".

The Wire - all five seasons
Riget (The Kingdom) - series 1

Try The Inbetweeners for something juvenile, adult and bonkers.

Rockingdoc, if you haven't already, give this a try as it's an absolute must see in my opinion:

Deadwood, the complete series.

Acting and direction is beyond anything I've seen so far in a TV series. In my mind it equals Twin Peaks which has been my number one for years.

Very good suggestion munch ... watched series 1 and 2 recently - was half-expecting them to be disappointingly dated and remembered through rose-tinted specs ... but really funny and entertaining a decade or two later.

Would have to add Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister as other great box-sets.

If you have a cunning plan for this, may I suggest the 'Blackadder' box set?!!

One that always amused me, some light easy-watching comedy.

This is going well, lot of TV series that I didn't previously know.

"Inbetweeners" very good, but I prefer "Skins", which I think is the best current UK TV since "Shamless" went silly.

Watched all of "Carnivale" on Virgin, and while HBO series are usually a safe bet, I thought it lost the plot badly in the second series.

Wasn't impressed by Mad Men at first but getting into it.

Deadwood looks like it would be my cup of tea.

Always been a British comedy fan, so already very familiar with the greats like; "Dead Donkey", "Blackadder", anything Python etc.

Tend to like US crime series from Warner, but much less sure about US comedy, I just can't get "Curb your Enthusiasm" for example.

Some bloody scouser or other! Or was one of them by Jimmy McScouse? Whatever, two great scouse series.

E.R. certainly changed my life.

Damn, I wish I could get pictures to post here.

Battlestar Galactica - the 'Reimagined' version. Series 1-4 made between 2004 and 2008. Bloody brilliant if very dark most of the time.

The Beiderbecke Trilogy: The Complete Series.

Well worth watching, I tend to put it on every few years and never fail to enjoy the humour and interaction between the quirky characters.
