What is the best TV series box set

Posted by: Rockingdoc on 23 June 2010

I find great pleasure these days from long sessions watching complete sets of TV series which I have missed or overlooked. The complete Sopranos and The Wire won me over to this new way of watching, followed by West Wing. This has completely cured me of the real time waster of watching some rubbish program, just because it is on. My current favourite is Spooks, and I'm about to embark on the complete 24. I tried Lost, but didn't like it.
Any suggestions for TV box sets we should all investigate?
I got the Buffy suggestion in the other thread, but might wait until it drops below 100 quid.

p.s. I also have the complete Gerry Anderson and Roberta Leigh, but let's not go there.

Well worth watching, I tend to put it on every few years and never fail to enjoy the humour and interaction between the quirky characters.

Will.

And the soundtrack's fabulous too.

The repackaged set includes a CD as well as the DVDs.

I would highly recommend JAG (and for those that didn’t realise - NCIS span off at the end of series 8), and created by the guy that did Quantum leap (another one i'd suggest)

Totally agree Monty.

A tremendous storyline with fabulous performances from...

Christopher Eccleston, Mark Strong, Gina McKee, Daniel Craig, Peter Vaughn and Malcolm McDowell.

I always got the series mixed up with GBH when trying to remember the political corruption storyline.

A new DVD set is released in September, here.

Delighted to see so many people recommend 'The Beidebeck' series.

My choices would be:
Drama - serious.

'The Wire' (David Simon) - every bit as good as the critics say.

'Homicide: Life on the Street' initially based on a documentray book by David Simon, and he became a producer during the later series. More character based, than the polt driven 'Wire', I find it hard to separate the two i sterm of quality.

'Band of Brothers' (Spielberg, Hanks), True and very moving.

Drama - entertainment.

Dexter (a surprising and unpredictable series).

'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' I had to be bullied to watch this, but in the end I gave in, and was pleasantly surprised, at its best really moving drama, although can be light and patchy. Avoid series 1 and 7, but 2 is great.

Comedy

'The Beiderbecke Trilogy' as other have said, it is just the loveliest few hour you can spend in front of a TV.

'Family Guy' it will offend everyone, but hopefully you will not mind.

Documentary

'The World at War' (Jeremy Isaacs, 1974)

Also any of the David Attenborough series.

probably lots more, but that is a start.

Anyone picked up this one yet? (I'm still saving up my allowance.) The ur-sitcom for boomers (in the US, at least):

Not everybody loves David Attenborough, Professor Timothy Fielding had his reservations as illustrated in the clip below - however, he dislikes Johnny Mathis even more.

Heimat I and II - haven't seen three - Fanny and Alexander ( Ok it's a mini series and doesn't come in a box ) and very definitely the Battlestar Galactica remake which is brilliant. Can't believe only Frank's mentioned it. If you like sci-fi at all buy it. If you don't, buy the pilot anyway, just in case.

British who-dun-its work for me:

Inspector Morse
Inspector Lewis
The Last Detective (Dangerous Davies)
Midsomer Murders
Rebus
Messiah
The Vice
Dalziel and Pascoe
Taggert
Poirot

Also thought Wallander was well done.

Onto series four now. Well written, quick, and the acting is top class proffessional.

Really liked Life on Mars. Very un-PC.
