Digital Video Cameras

OK before the kids finally grow up, I now have some money to invest in a digital video camera.
I have recently changed my PC and had 2 GB of RAM inserted (!), which I think will help video editing.
However, I have no idea at all about digital video cameras, so advise, recommendation etc please for an absolute beginner.
No advise will be considered to simplistic.
