Problems with Nait5

Posted by: colinjay on 16 December 2003

Okay...
I have searched for answers to this poblem but no-one has adressed it definitively.

my nait5 periodically (usually after playing for a few hours) starts to make an evil crackle/buzz when i lower the volume. it is absolutley terrifying especially when i'm lowering the volume when the music gets a bit too loud (read- deafening)

i am assuming that i need to send this baby back to naim, but as this is the christmas season and things are tight, i may have to hold off for a while if the repairs are going to be costly. im pretty sure im out of warranty, so that wont help. any suggestions or comments on what might be going on?

btw- interestingly enough i have to pause the cd (not mute) to get the sound to go away while changing volume. this is a temporary interim fix, but is annoying for all of the obvious reasons.

im wondering how this problem developed as i tend to baby everything in the system (unplugging during thunderstorms, leaving plugged 24/7)

thanks,
colin

thanks, "zipper" would describe the sound fairly well. past 12 o'clock its a scary "BRRRRAAAAAAPPPP!"

would anyone happen to know if this is a simple fix? maybe performed by a dealer? it doent sound like it to me though. rats, off to naim then (sometime next year!?)

Mine did this...once...I pressed mute and unmuted and it was sorted. Hasn't done it since - yours sounds like it needs some TLC from Naim.

i also noticed that this problem goes away (temporarily) when I power off and unplug, then power back on

I'd send it to Naim - will your dealer replace it for you?

Are nait5s meant to make a small 'zipping' noise? Because mine does, although its obviously nothing like as bad as colinjay's, and isn't a problem to me, but should it do it at all?

well... two more questions/responses...

i doubt that my dealer would replace it as i dont believe he sell naim any longer or is even in business... there is no naim dealer in my town (i live 100 mi outside of dallas now)... the only dealer in dallas, id just rather not deal with them altogether.

can anyone tell me how long the naim warranty is? to be honest i have never even though about it (i feel pretty stupid now) i did recieve the nait as a gift, so im not sure i could procure a reciept anyway...

thanks for the help so far guys.

Colin,

I'm sorry to hear of the problem you are experiencing with your Nait. I suggest you take a note of the unit's serial number (found on the back panel or printed on the box) and then give The helpful folks at Naim Audio North America in Chicago a call. Their telephone number is (773) 338 6262.

Richard
