Intro 1s and 2s

Posted by: Phill82 on 10 December 2003

Hello,
I've heard the intro mkIIs quite a lot at my local Naim dealer and they always sound absolutely stunning - really open, very full balanced sound and not thin like all other speakers seem to me. However I've just bought a second hand pair of the original mkI intros, and when playing these at home they just sound brash, light weight and thin. I noticed that these mkI versions have a relatively complex crossover attached to the back whereas the mkII doesn't - I was told that the mkII uses just a cap like the Epos ES14 does.
Does anyone know what the difference is between the mkI and mkII, and whether I can modify my mkIs? I currently have them set so that the bass driver is wired straight through (bypassing the crossover) and they sound better.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Are you running the same gear that your dealer is running? The intros are very revealing of what is coming down the pike and can sound bad and thin as a result.

Also, the intro MKI has the scanspeak tweeter which is also more critical than the vifa they use in the MKII. What I believe you have is actually the MKI.I which had an "improved" crossover to try to tame the brashness of the original MKI which had a very similar (if not the same) X-over to the new intro II.

I would like to try the original intro with the 5 series. I bet it would really sing.

Hi Connon,
I've actually heard the intro mkIIs running from lots of different gear (Naim, rega, roksan, arcam, cyrus (I work during the holidays at a hifi shop)) and they sounded pretty good on all of it, although yes, they do reveal exactly what your putting into them.
Just quickly where I'm coming from - I usually use ES14s on the end of a Nait5 (as pre) into a NAP180, and using a micromega solo as the source. I'm not actually very happy with this set up, I thought it sounded more natural when I just used the nait5 on its own (but no bass control), and I think the CD player sounds a bit nasty and bright.
But anyway, I bought the intros on behave of a friend, and have temperarily substituted the epos for them to see what they are like. So coming from the same electronics, the intros sound most unnatural compared to the epos.

how can you tell the difference betwen the intros speakers just by looking at them - I have an into but dont know which it is.

cheers

Phil, I still hold that the MKIs are brighter than the MK IIs and then you have a cd player that you say tends toward nasty and bright. Sounds like a recipe for disaster. My experience with the epos 14s is that they are fairly mellow on top and have lots of bass. A very fun and forgiving, yet very musical speaker. My first experience with naim was a cd3, nait2 and epos 11s. The epos went a long way with electronics upgrades and then I bought SBLs. Now, the epos 11s sound muffled and lacking harmonics every time I listen to them. Borrow a good cd player from your store (cd5 or better) and see what happens.

haroon, take off the top box and find the serial number. Reference that against the naim website info regarding serial #s and product changes.

Hi Phill

I've just bought a new pair of Intro II's and I'm very pleased with them on the end of a CD3, 112 and 150.

They are anything but thin: possibly even a bit fruity in the bottom.

I use SBL's in my main system and find the Intros to have basically the same sonic character, with somewhat less refinement and control.

But........... a bloody bargain, as they convey all the necessary excitement and emotion of the music.

The originals were generally accepted as a bit of a disaster with a very basic internal cross-over. This was fairly quickly rectified with an external 'SBL type' external x-o.

The latest version have reverted back to a (better) internal x-o but now have the much better Credo cabinet.

There are those who say that to hear the difference between the latest Intro II and Credo:-

'The wind has to be blowing in the right direction' - making them something of a bargain.

The bass/mid unit is a lower spec version of the unit in the Allae. The tweeter is a Vifa.

Get 'em while you can - the Arriva cometh but is a different beast by all accounts.

Thanks chaps for your replies.

Haroon, from what I know and what people have told me, if your intros have real wood vineer then they are mkII, if they are vinyl and have a crossover box attached to the back then they are the improved mkI, and if they are vinyl and have no crossover box on the back them they are the original mkIs.

This might be useful in future but I cant find it on the site. Can you give a link? The only thing I can find is a product history with dates but no serial numbers.

Thanks

Product Histories
Here's a brief guide to products old and new: introductions, updates and replacements.
Click HERE to date equipment from its serial number

Haroon,
From the naim website product histories click on the word "here" which is a different (though subtley so)color from the rest of the text. that will lead you to your prize.

Mk 1's disappointed me, but Mk 2's are much better.

They sound good on the end of CD2/72/hicap/140

Cheers mate!

doesnt do any good though the serial no falls into 1996 :
Intro 1996 Upgraded 1996
Intro 1996 Discontinued and replaced by Intro2 1999

So does that make it old intro 1 or upgraded intro 1?? Well I know its new (mark2) intro 1 as it has an external xover.

Well something for naim to clear up Red Face

Haroon,

because you have the external x-over on that pair it is the "upgraded" intro one.

Please email naim with the exact serial number and they can tell you which iteration it be.

Hey, I've just ditched my 180 and flatcap and am just running the intros straight from my Nait5 and all of a sudden they've started playing music - something can't be right here!?
