Nice link, thanks John. I'm gonna look up a few Steely Dan songs!

Good link and the some of the lyrics from the best band in the land are there. For who can forget immortal lines like
Pulling the ice axe from my leg I staggered on
Spindrift stinging my remaining eye
I finally managed to reach the station
Only to find that the bus replacement service had broken down
And wondering to myself whether it should actually be called a train replacement service
Is Nigel Blackwell the greatest lyricist of this modern age? Not 'arf.
I wonder if I could do a PhD in the meaning of HMHB songs.

Steely Dan: The Boston Rag
Any news was good news
And the feeling was bad at home
I was out of my mind and you were on the 'phone
Lonnie was the kingpin
Back in 1965
I was singing this song when Lonnie came alive
Chorus
Bring back the Boston Rag
Tell all your buddies that it ain't no drag
Bring back the Boston Rag
You were Lady Bayside
There was nothing that I could do
So I pointed my car down Seventh Avenue
Lonnie swept the playroom
And he swallowed up all he found
It was 48 hours 'til Lonnie came around
Chorus
I've always found this song fascinating. The lyrics are elliptical, but wonderfully evocative. A masterpiece of concision.

If you look up Elbow songs, Guy Garvey has posted in some of the discussions (as munroekelly).

I figured that some of Steely Dan's lyrics would come under scrutiny!

Agreed on 'The Boston Rag'. The timeless enigma of the Dan's impenetrable lyrics is one of the things that keeps me hooked.
And oh that sublime dirty, dirty geetar. Is it Denny Dias, Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter or both?
John.

You can't trust a site that can't even get the lyrics right
"They slither while they pass, they slip away across the universe"
Strangely enough, they are correct on the Bowie version on the same site.

Someone once asked Don McClean what the meaning of American Pie was and Don replied it meant he never had to work again.

Dylan was asked if could say what his songs were about. He replied "Yes". The interviewer then asked him "Well could you tell me what your songs are about?". Bob replied "Some are about 4 minutes, some about 5 minutes and others are about 14 minutes". The interviewer asked if Dylan could be more precise and Bob replied "No".
