What would be your top three Jazz albums for brilliantly recorded and performed double bass?

I suggest the recent "Ballads" on Camjazz for superb bass work by Johnson with Pieranunzi's trio.

I will give it a go - thanks for the tip. I agree about the two Paris albums - I have both and they are excellent.

I should also mention an absolutely stunning duet recording by Pieranunzi and Marc Johnson on the Italian label EGEA called "Transnoche", beautifully recorded late one night in Perugia. I would strongly urge you to try to run this down. As piano and bass duets go this one is hard to beat. It is EGEA 098. Pieranunzi has several fine CDs on EGEA, but this one is my favorite

I'd like to recommend "the touch of your lips" by chet baker with NHOP on bass and doug raney on guitar. Released on Steeplechase records I've only ever seen it once in the shops. Chet released a lot of dodgy records but this one is out of the top drawer and the trio really clicks - NHOP is in stunning form and there is some brilliant bass playing. It is well worth a listen.

Hi Guys,
This is my first post on this forum. I'm reading it frequently but not on this thread.
I used to be a (pro)bassplayer myself and I think this is the wrong question,
A bassplayer isn't anything on his own. It's always the interaction between the drummer or the pianist. That's why Scott LaFaro and Bll Evans made such a fantastic team. They invented something new. There wouldn't have been Eddie Gomezes or Jaco's if not for them.
The best line-up? Oscar Pettiford who invented the role as solo-basspalyer with Ellington. What about Ron Carter and Tony Williams and Miles. The best! Ray Brown and Oscar Peterson? Whooow! Scott and Bill? Out of this world! But have you ever listend to Dave Holland and Jack de Johnnette? That's a groove no one ever managed! I can go on and on and I won't

My personal top bassplayers are:
Paul Chambers (so elastic, realy swings)
Scott La Faro (the first solo bassplayer who set the tone)
Dave Holland (what a groove this men has)

Pluyt,

Good first post, welcome to the mad house. Looks like we think along similar lines regarding bassists, see second post on this thread.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that Jimmy Blanton?

After re-reading your 2nd post. Did you know that Joe Pass did a concert with NHOP and they were doing this fast Charlie Parker thing and Niels played the theme unisono with Joe.
Afterwards Joe told Niels "now we both need a bassplayer" Winker.

Hi Nicnaim,
Thanks for noticing. Not sending my first post, but that we're on similar lines Smile

Back to the real question: the top three jazz albums.
My vote is
1. My funny Valentine (Miles Davis Ron Carter Tony Williams Herbie Hancock George Coleman)
2. Bill Evans live at the Village Vanguard (Scott la Farao and Paul Motion)
3. I don't know. Too many options. Confused
