Was wondering, does a 3 yr old hicap sound better than a new fc2 n a CD5o

A 3 year-old Hi-cap WILL sound better than a new FC2 into a CD5.

Yes it will sound a 'bit' better, but what is the rest of your system? A fc2 works wonders on a CD5, plus you have the option of providing power to another 'device'.

Julian,
I'm surprised by your finding - my understanding is that the FC2 is just a FC1 with two extra regulators and an additional winding on the transformer. Could the improvement be down to the case?

Yes, this is all true, but if alex95 has a 112 or Nait5, then the fc2 will bring about greater overall benefits since it sorts out his preamp as well. He can always add a hicap later which will improve things no end later.
Come to think of it he can do this with his preamp irrespective of which one he's driving! So I would go fc2. The only exception is earlier Naits. I wouldn't go to the bother of having the Nait modified to accept the *cap input. It's a personal thing - I just don't like modifying Naits.

Frank.

Gentlemen
To add to the discussion, I have a 62 pre-amp which I am considering adding an external PSU to. In the 62 when it is connected to a HiCap, one 24v rail supplies the phono stages (only) and the other the rest of the pre-amp. Now I have modified the unit to remove the phono stages and created another line level input (equivalent to some 326 cards).
Would I be best to run this with a SNAPS or FC1 or will I see a further improvement when using a HiCap, even though I would only be using one rail of the HiCaps two outputs ???

depends on what you are using the second output of the fc2 for but generally yes the HC will have a larger impact on your system..
"So what ya gonna do when the novelty has gone.."
