HiFace Buggered?

Posted by: Holty on 28 August 2010

So like the kiss of death i posted on another thread how great my HiFace > Foobar etc was and then boom it starts playing up Confused

I'm using the WASAPI driver 1.03 for W7 with a buffer speed of 1000ms.

everything was fine, and has been for about 2 months, then i put on a track and there was this 'clicking' sound (like when old LP's have a bit of fuzz on them), it then started jumping and cutting out?

I tried rebooting, messing with the buffer sizes etc but it kept happening? anyway I left it for an hour went back, halfway through a song it happens again and now won't stop happening?

I have also tried the kernel streaming and get the same thing.

I disconnected the HiFACE >DC1 and used a toslink from the onboard SP/DIFF output and it's fine Roll Eyes

Anyone experienced this? Driver or hardware fault?

Hi Holty -

Suggest you search for hiface + clicking over at computeraudiophile.

That site has a few threads discussing this, and in most cases, it appears that the problem has been resolved through driver updates.

Good luck.

Hi Holty

I had problems with the Hiface using J.River Media Center 15 but I must admit that when I used Foobar it worked fine.

I managed to solve the problems with J.River and posted my solution on this forum:

https://forums.naimaudio.com/ev...252993337#2252993337

This post contains a link to the beta 1.03 driver, which appears to work better. It certainly does with J.River! You might want to try that driver. I have found that the Hiface can be a bit quirky and that uninstalling and reinstalling the driver and reconfiguring sometimes cures the problem.

Failing that, I suggest you contact Keith at Purite Audio:

Good luck with getting it sorted

D-Jazz,

Weirdly i'm using kernel streaming on JMC 15 and it works fine with the hiface? No clicking or interrupted playback!

I wonder if its the dark one skin i installed last week? I've un-installed everything on on the computer and re-installed so fingers crossed!

I doubt it.

I only had problems with the Hiface and JRMC15 when I was running WASAPI. Kernel streaming and ASIO worked fine with the driver published on the M2Tech website. I installed ASIO4ALL when running in ASIO and that worked without problems as well. I thought that WASAPI mode was supposed to give the best performance ... I will leave pcstockton and others to verify that one. I'm no expert!

I also would doubt that installing DarkOne caused your problems. I never had any problems with it.

That may be. But it is just like FLAC vs AIFF vs WAV vs ALAC. No difference in my ears.

ASIO, WASAPI, KS all sound the same to me. They are all bit perfect and shouldn't offer up any differences.

Then again, in my system DS and ASIO dont sound provided DS is bit perfect. Everyone assumes you MUST bypass the K-mixer in order to be bit perfect. No true. You can even use Foobar's internal volume and not disrupt bit-perfection in XP. But ASIO/KS/WASAPI does help ensure that it is perfect.

Use what works. They are all the same in my opinion and experience.

Hi Patrick -

Agree 100% with your post.

The only thing that may give WASAPI an edge going forward is that it is native to Windows. Am thinking that the software developer's job may be easier using an API and OS from the same vendor, and not having to deal with a 3rd-party.

I do see that the JRMC site now says that if you are using Vista or 7, then their recommendation is to use WASAPI. Still, I doubt that they, or anyone else, will discontinue ASIO support anytime soon.
