Artists you are surprised not to see discussed on this forum - 10CC

Not many people seem to play or mention 10CC - probably unfashionable, but some guys who could write fantastic songs, create superb vocal collages and could really play - what more could want and at their very best they produced Sheet Music.
Every bit as good as the post-Barrett Floyd IMHO, but nowhere near the recognition. Perhaps, 10CC are considered a bit too Art for Art's Sake, but the is probably why I like them. The songs don't root from some long suffered pain or reflect gritty urban life, they are much better than that. They paint fantastic pictures that do not come from experience, but a desire to make original and exciting music with a twist or two and this is why I think they succeed.
Anybody else like them and not ashamed to admit it.

Good call ROTF. Some of their word play is superb, and they make/made some great records.

ROTF, I'm not at all ashamed to admit that I both like and play their music, although I did lose interest after they split in two. Dreadlock Holiday didn't really cut it in the same way as Rubber Bullits or I'm Mandy! Catchy but, as you say, not nearly as clever. I think I liked the fact that they were a bit clever rather than just pop. Heh I like Steely Dan as well!

Agree. It's interesting to note how some bands/musicians that where big (and good, in this case) in their days are nearly forgotten today. But as james already noted, 10CC got distinctly worse after the split up.

I'm not ashamed to admit to this also.
10CC was the first concert I ever went to, at the Fairfield halls in Croydon when I was about 12.
Some of it sounds very dated it has to be admitted, but is that such a bad thing really?
"How Dare You" is my fave of theirs I think.
But I also liked "10 out of 10" post split towards the end, and Eric Stewart's solo album "Frootie Rooties" is also excellent - the guitar playing on 'The Ritual' is his best I reckon - and he is a very talented guitarist.

Wow - I'm not alone. Nothing wrong with dated in my book
I'll have to check that out - don't know that elpee - thanks for the tip.
Even as far back as the Hotlegs days the guitar work was outstanding.
BT if all you know of Hotlegs is Neanderthal Man then it is atypical of the rest of the Hotlegs Thinks School Stinks records, which as bit more 10CC and worth checking out.

Yep, I'm a fan. Played this post Godley-Creme effort a few times lately. Good Morning Judge is sort of stuck in my head at the moment.

Ahhh, that takes me back to the 'frayed lips' era of the 1970's - I was fortunate enough to do a huge amount of snogging with one particular 16yr old to a background of 10CC.
I was spotty 16 then too in case the polis are monitoring this.

"2nd sitting for the last supper" must have been great fun for them to record; it certainly is great fun to listen to it even now. Good call on 10CC ROTF

A superb band indeed. And I still love "I'm Not in Love".
There was something about them on TV the other night...

One of 10CC (co)-invented the E-Bow as well.

They are f$%&*#in amazing really. They produced some of the best sounding albums of the 70's in my opinion. Godley and Creme yes, but let us not forget Graham Gouldman who came to 10CC after penning some of the best songs EVER: "For Your Love" "Evil Hearted You" "Heartful of Soul" "Bus Stop" and "Look Through Any Window" I had no idea until I was in my old second hand shop (we missed this one Howard - we'll have to go there when you return - it was the one that was closed right next to the freeway onramp) and they had his solo lp spinning and I thought "who is this covering all these old tunes" and it was none other than GG doing his own tunes. Great album, the counter guy would not sell me as it was his own personal copy. Drats!

I still automatically mumble/sing "Life is a Minestrone" whenever I see it on a menu. People think I am mad.

Yes, with that maddening guitar riff how could you be expected not to?

Was that the thing called Gizmo, or something like that, when it was launched?

Johan,
The Gizmo was invented by Godley & Creme c1975 here.
Here are a couple of interesting 10cc sites minestrone & Mr Blint's Attic (devoted to the worship of the album Consequences)
I have followed 10cc since their debut and really enjoyed the fun filled concerts
It was (and is) unusual to have an intelligent group produce tunes with a great sense of humour. I guess they were the UK's equivalent of Steely Dan, regarding humour infuzed songs.

I have always wanted a Gizmo, but have to slum it with an E-bow.......

Having just got the gas bill I realise 10CC were ahead of their time - the cost of living in dreams is rising like the crime rate.

This thread has inspired me to find some 10cc on CD that doesn't sound boxy and compressed like my compilation album. The tracks are great but the production is not the best.

10cc U.S. or Jap presses are a safer buy if you want to avoid that.

Sorry slight confusion(old age) over E-bow and Gizmo.
