PC to Naim - is it worth bothering?
Posted by: robw on 08 November 2002
Has anyone tried connecting their PC sound card line in/out to a Naim amp (spare DIN socket).
I realise a trip to Maplin's for a few adaptors would be required to make the connection from din to the 3.5mm input on the PC. Is worth bothering?
The reason for asking is to copy some vinyl to CD. Also is playback through my system likely to damage anything?
Any comments ( and yes I know about copyright laws)
Cheers,
Robert

Yes rob, this is an easy operation. I u se a mac, I required a stereo mini jack (mac end) to two phonos, then I attached that to a din to phono I had, this was only because I couldn't find a minjack to din. I am sure they are avilable somewhere.
If you want to go the whole hog have a tape lead done so it can go in and out.
Then its just a case of software to record your record onto the PC, Outputting from the tape loop insures that all sound controls can be handled at the PC end. just be carefull not to push it into the red when recording.
Don't bother piping the deck striaght into the PC the out put is pap, and you can opf course play CDs from the PC through the amp, on my mac however it sounded kac, probably because it was going through two preamps.
Have fun.
Lead from maplins 3.99 BTW

I have conected my sky satelite to my Naim amp and sometimes play music form the tv through it. The sound is pretty poor and all it does is show how bad the reception is.
I do find it interesting that the adverts sound considerably better than the music.

My PC is connected to 72/hicap/140 into Ruark sabres, using a specially made up interconnect cable from Chord Co in Salisbury.
Mp3 does sound good through good hifi, less dynamic than Cd; but still a big improvement over computer speakers.

Hi!
I strongly recommend to connect the PC via a digital connection to your DAT/CDR/MiniDisk. Switch your DAT/CDR/MiniDisk to Monitor-mode so you can listen through your HiFi. I use an U2A, but I don't use it's inbuilt DACs: I have it connected with an optical lead to my CDR where DA-concersion is done.

I use a Chord Co interconnect, 5 pin DIN to two minijacks. It works a treat but is very revealing of the quality of your soundcard. My current one is crap. Upgrade pending.
As for software, I use Audiograbber. A restricted version is available free (got mine from a PC mag). The good news is the restricted version is perfectly OK for 'line in' recordings, i.e. vynil. It only restricts CD copying to 5 tracks selected at random. It has a few good features such as silence detection and track naming. The full version will also convert to MP3.
You can get this from www.audiograbber.com
Enjoy

I'd partly agree with Jun, I use a M-Audio 'Flying Calf' A-D to send data from the system, to a PC in another room.
A good soundcard / interface is essential though, I now use an M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 which can do bit-accurate transfers, unlike a Soundblaster Live, which mangles everything, although it gives acceptable performance if you stick to 48kHz sample rate - it cannot do any other rate without on-the-fly sample rate conversion.
The 24bit / 96k card is excellent though, and very quiet despite being in the noisy PC environment.

Hi,
I have got a very basic soundblaster on my pc. I use its digital out into a d/a converter (creek obh-14) then to my 102/hi/250. Of course my cd2 does a much better job, but it is satisfying.
In my view a pc is a terrific video system with endless upgrade possibilities.

Hello,
I did a lot of copying from analog (tape machine) to PC via my Naim equipment. The better the Naim equipment, the better the results.
Definitely it is worth to do such a connection. But, if you want to do a lot of Analog/CD burning, think about to invest in a good Analog /Digital converter (I bought an external Analog/Digital converter). Today I would go for one of the 24 bit / 96 kHz converters.
I still listen mainly to my records only for my car radio I burn now CDs from analog. I am waiting for the new SACD/DVD-A formats to be established before I will take the effort to archive my record collection to digital.
Before burning CDs you want probably use some filters - take attention. Many softwares make errors while recalculation. As long as a record is not completely unlistenable to - I restrained from using filters burning my CDs even with the few cracks that come from the records.
Good luck

I'm listening to this (paste link in browser) at the moment via iBook, Nait 3 and Kan 3's. It's rather heavy I suppose...
