Second Hand Naim CD2 - How Good?

Posted by: Dave Mudie on 27 October 2003

Thanks to all who responded to my original question on 'Which Second Hand Naim CD Player'.

Most respondents seem to think that the Naim CD2 would be the best bet in the context of my present system (Naim Nait 3, Proac Tablettes).

Has anyone compared the Naim CD2 directly with a Linn LP12 turntable? If so how do they compare? The configuration of my LP12 (Valhalla) is Alphason Xenon arm and ATF5 cartridge.

thanks

Hi Dave

Be Careful.

Naim equipment has an excellent reputation for longevity and 'in house' serviceability.

But....... CD players wear out - or bits of them do; and are expensive to put right. I should know - I have a 'Naim refurbished' CD3.

Don't forget to consider a new CD5i at £825.

Good luck.

Hi Dave
I used to have a CDS2 and an LP12/Valhalla/Ittok LVII/Dynavector 20XL and they compared well against each other. The LP12 gave a warmer and more rounded sound whilst the CDS2 was slightly less rounded but sounded more dynamic. However, the CDS2 replaced a CDX which in turn replaced a CD5 and I must say that the CDS2 was the best CD player that I have ever heard (I have not seriously listend to a CDS3 - I don't dare!) Financial issues have meant me selling the CDS2 but I do regret having to let it go - it was excellent.
Not sure if this is of any help but I really enjoy my LP12 and would not hesitate to buy a CDS2 if I had the money.
Cheers
