room size- what is "just right"

I have often wondered whether my very large room is a blessing or a headache. I have a 30ft by 20ft room with catherdral ceiling to 16ft. Furthermore the room opens up into other parts of the house. I have cds2/nat01/82/super/135s/linn 5140s and I am very happy with the sound I am getting. I keep my speakers on the short wall and my listening seating is about 8-10 ft from the wall that the speakers are on. When I listen in this seating, I get a fairly immediate sound. When I sit on the far side of the room it is a very different sound altogether. That is it is somewhat homogenized and less "hi fi" sounding. You cannot hear individual instruments like you can when you listen up close. I wonder what my system would sound like in a smallish room. Would the benefits outweigh any negatives. Do most forum members think that a large room is a hindrance or possibly beneficial in that large orchestral works or other larger soundfield type music would be able to expand into the room, something that they wouldn`t be able to do in a small room. After all, most music is performed in rooms alot bigger than the average listening room. I my system it took the 135s the really energize the room, which my old 250 couldn`t really do as well. Also, I am somewhat limited in my speaker choice. I was talking to chris koster at the NY hifi show. He had previously told me that SBLs would have trouble working in my room. At the show, he mentioned that the new SL2s would also not be quite right. NBLs or DBLs would work, he said. As I am quite happy with my 5140s and I dont want to spend the $s on NBLs or DBLs I am staying pat. Any comments on big vs small rooms? Hope everyone is having a good weekend. david.
