Wilco - A good place to start?
Posted by: GraemeH on 06 July 2007
I'm thinking I might try a few Wilco albums as I suspect I'll like the music given the short snippets Iv'e heard.
What two albums can anyone suggest for a Wilco 'newbie'?
Thanks
Graeme

Hello Graeme,
As a taster for the earlier stuff, I would pick the double "Kicking Television - Live in Chicago" and then the current "Sky Blue Sky"
Happy Buying

I would recommend Sky Blue Sky to begin with. I find their earlier stuff not as initially accessible as I thought it would be.

Graeme, Try Summerteeth, Yankee Foxtrot, and Sky Blue Sky for a good taste.

Sky Blue Sky is 'easy' Wilco-and very good too but I'd suggest YHF or A Ghost Is Born as well.

I found Yankee Hotel Foxtrot really hard work myself.
BTW, what does it stand for..YHF?
Police radio language thingy

I'd start with Being There & Summerteeth, I think they encapsulate the Wilco sound. YHF & A Ghost is Born are musically quite different to what went before, and whilst these two albums have their fans, I'd say that if you start there you might just miss out on something really special. It's a bit like Radiohead, if you didn't catch The Bends before OK Computer, would you ever ???

A lot of the earlier Wilco CD's are available on 3 for £15 and such like deals.

Thanks alot folks - Iv'e ordered the double live set from Amazon as it seems to offer a good 'starter' range of tracks. Might then get the latest album if I get hooked.
Cheers

I'd start with Uncle Tupelo

Hi Graeme, I began my Wilco journey only recently and although I've held off on the recent disc, I plumped for YHF and A Ghost Is Born first; the former is definitely more 'challenging' but a hoot in parts.
I'm pleased that I followed this route; Summerteeth is weak in comparison IMO and Being There is great but nowhere near as ambitious as YHF.

Graeme,
I seemed to follow roughly the same path as Cyrene with A Ghost is Born quickly followed by YHF. I found both these albums were ultimately slow burners that revealed hidden depths on repeated listening. I then went for Summerteeth. And that album is where I differ to Cyrene in perspective. Initially I found this to be a bit simplistic by comparison to the other two but once again it warrants taking the time to get to know it. I actually find I play it every bit as often as A Ghost is Born and YHF. In essence I rate all three albums very highly indeed and on a par with one another. Have not heard the latest one as yet.

Being There is a great intro to Wilco - especially as it was one of their earlier ones. The live album is very good but I've always considered live albums to be a better listen once you're familiar with the band rather than as an introduction.
Sky Blue Sky may be 'easy' but to my mind it demonstrates a set of musicians absolutely honed in to one another, each track being tight as a drum.
