F1 2006

Posted by: Basil on 10 March 2006

The new season kicks off in Bahrain.

McLaren are off to a flyer as Kimi Raikkonen's car conks out with an electrical fault 12 laps into the first practise session!

Raikkonen's team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya also complained of problems with his car.

Michael Schumacher set the second fastest time behind Honda test driver Anthony Davidson, with Renault's world champion Fernando Alonso fifth.

Kimi Raikkonen's weekend goes from bad to disastrous after a rear suspension failure in the first session of qualifying.

Overall the new qualifying rules are a terrific improvement.

Can't wait for tomorrow’s race.

Agree with Basil, there. Only one improvement now needed - get rid of James Allen Winker

Good to see MS has finally released his handbrake. I wonder how he forgot all of last season...

Cheers Hammerhead,

Nice to know I'm not typing to myself here!

Too right about James Allen, but I think Steve Rider is a huge improvement over Grim(sp) Rosenthal! Mind you, Dame Edna Everage would have been a great improvement over Grim(sp) Rosenthal!

I thought Rubens Barrichello was disappointing, considering how hard he used to push Michael. Very early days, I know, but I was expecting him to blow Button into the weeds from day one.

Chaps

I spent 4 months working at Williams in 2004 and the only thing that everyone, including Frank, agreed on was that you can only expect the unexpected.

The past is no indication of what will happen in the next race.

Regards

Mick

Yeah!

Although I was glad I recorded it because it allowed me to fast forward through most of the rather pointless third session, until it heated up. Not to mention all the drivel that they manage to pack into the show.

Cheers

Talking to my mate Roger Red-Watch last night (he works for the Woking team), he wasn't too optimistic. Seems like he was right then...

I'll give the new qualifying malarcky 6 races.

I'll bet he's even less optimistic now!

Harry,

I think the third session of qualifying will improve as the teams get used to the new rules.

I take that back, if they can find some reliabilty, McLaren (Kimi) are going to be a force this year.

What a race, Rosberg was outstanding.

Hopefully this is the start of of a three way scrap between Schumacher, Alonso and Raikkonen that will last the whole season.

F1 boring? I think not!

Agree on the third session Basil - let's see how it goes.

Hardly a nail biting race but some good racing for sure. How nice also to start the season on a power circut where it is possible to overtake. Many good drives and I'd have to give it equally to Kimi and Nico. I thought Button did pretty good too - he had to pass quite a few people on the track and pulled off some good moves. Activating grumpy mode, it was a pity that the result was decided in the pits but I think there's much to look forward to. Maybe we'll get a result on the circut next week.

Cheers

Fastest driver, as in most of last season, was Kimi but his team can't seem to make a reliable car to get through qualifying and race.

Alonso clearly has Shitmaker beaten (as would Kimi, if he had a proper car).

Button was an arse, as usual, but that didn't stop the ITV commentators peddling his (Button's) line of shite that he's one of four drivers who could win the championship this year. Accept it, chaps, he'll never even win a race, unless all the good drivers have problems all at once.

Well, I guess you like who you like and you don't like who you don't. I wouldn't write Button off yet and I wouldn't deny even the slowest back marker their self belief (deluded or otherwise). If only James Allen wasn't such a bloody irritatiog wanker - but I digress. At this stage I wouldn't write any of the big suppliers/teams off. Things will be more clear after a few races. Let's just hope we see good races - I'm not too fussed who wins if it's a good race.

Cheers

Just curious, is this because he's German or successful?

The man is an arrogant toad, and a danger to other drivers, whom he has routinely tried to drive off the road (viz Coulthard, Hill, Villeneuve et al).

Dass er Deutsch ist, ist mir egal. Ich habe nichts gegen Deutschland.

As I've always said to a mate, milk floats racing would be more interesting than F1 Winker

Bring on Moto GP! Big Grin

Aren't they all (to a greater or lesser extent)? It's all part of the game in competitive sport.

I can hardly see the drivers having their cars fitted with indicators and oversize rear view mirrors to allow gentlemanly racing.

"I say old chap, would you mind if I took this corner seeing as I was here first?" Nah, didn't think so Razz

Go Go-Karting - now quarter given there either!

It's going to be interesting over the rest of the season for sure - that was one of the more consistently exciting races for ages.
It's a shame that when the cars or drivers are very closely matched it's difficult for them to get close enough for a decent scrap though. Still, it'll be good to see how the cars develop over the first half of the season. Everyone seemd to have written-off the Ferrari's until they got to europe, but perhaps not!
I was well impressed with Rosberg, and Klein went very well too. The Hondas and particularly the Toyotas seemed to lack a bit of sparkle, especially with their testing budgets. Dud of the day had to be Montoya though - hard to justify yourself when your team-mate starts 22nd and beats you in the same car. Maybe he's already counted himself out though, and is considering a nice wealthy retirement alongside Ralf at Toyota?

Grahame.

I was fortunate enough to spend a few days in the pits at a couple of sao paolo GP's a few years ago, back when mr schumacher & herbert were driving for benetton. Although I kept myself to myself, seeing close up what schuey had to go through in a typical race weekend was a real eye opener. Previous to this, I was anti-schuey, & had the usual opinions of him.As a person, I found him to be actually quite polite & respectful, & a nice bloke. He couldn't sneeze without a camera being there to capture every glorious second of action, & he dealt with this attention very calmly. He was always polite & courteous to us in the pits, hotel staff, etc, which is not something you can say of a lot of other famous people.
I concur that some of his driving moves have been questionable at best, but as a person, I think the usual cliche'd view of him to be inaccurate.
