Good advice falling on deaf ears
Posted by: Jaseamondo on 11 December 2008
Sometimes i think i'm such a geek that no one ever really listens to what i have to say , not amongst like minded geeks like yourself yes you(well i assume you have something naim therefore you must be a geek ). I think forums can be a valuable resource for good information but sometimes that info gets buried. It can very often be the case of the person with the best sounding advice being listened to rather than the correct advice. Of course this is a life problem not just a forum one. I for instance mentioned to a work mate when he was talking about getting a new tv that plasma would be the way to go,when i tried to explain why i saw the lights turn off inside his head so just left it at that, the salesman at the local electrical retailer convinced him i was talking rubbish and that this was his job blah de blah then sold him a poor excuse of an lcd tv (good salesman I suppose or bad depending on how you look at it). I feel like i have let him down or is that the other way round to

.I must try not to let this put me of posting for fear of looking silly,If one day maybe i can save but one poor soul then maybe it will all be worth it

. Ok rant over.
ps the bit about being a geek is just a joke but you are, just admit it

I relate.
But I have learned that most people only want to be told what they want to hear.
Which is why we are doomed as a species!

Why would plasma be the way to go?

Plasma: Better black level, better rendition of detail in darker portions of programming, handles motion (sports) better. Larger screen sizes(50 inches and up although this is changing)
LCD: Brighter, lower energy consumption, screen less reflective of ambient room lighting.
These days both are really excellent although top notch plasma is still the best IMO.

I took six months deciding on which TV to buy, but from an early stage it was going to be plasma, much more natural colours and the picture quality is stunning, in a different league to any LCD I saw though some were closer than others.

I find the LCD motion stuff puzzling. My Bravia handles this sort of thing as clean and crisp as anybody could like. I've only ever seen this on one TV and that's the plasma in my local. I think people are trotting out opinions from a couple of years ago.

Not quite Tom. As I noted both are excellent but descriptions remain valid. Comparison was between latest Bravia 52 inch XBR 8 just out in the states and Pioneer Elite Kuros 50 or 60 inch. American football is a good test of motion artifacts as the camera seems to pan action closer than broadcasts I've seen of European football. Also noticed the effect during a movie on the XBR 8 but it was very minor and the new XBR 8 is really something. But its also $7990.

that's the bravia i have. i don't watch sports, but its been spectacular for movies.
having no screen reflections is under-rated as a benefit.
