What do you think the courts will throw at my friend?

Posted by: Tony Lockhart on 16 October 2008

He's due in court for sentencing at 2pm today.

Dangerous driving (crossing a solid white line while over-taking an unmarked car, in Wales) with 12 points already on his UK licence, if he ever gets one (he has been using his Zimbabwean licence) with 6 points for Careless Driving and 2x 3 points for speeding.

Yep, he realises he's been a complete plonker and doesn't need any 'moral high-ground' speeches from anyone.

So, what do you think he'll get? No prizes for closest!

Who would pay for that?

My 13-year old has today kept me up to speed with the new term, 'NED' = 'non-educatable delinquent'. A term from Scotland, apparently.

A bit of post rationalization there I think - up here a 'ned' has always just been a ned but never an acronym. Prison-fodder in the style of canon-fodder in the main.

It's got nothing to do with "non-educated delinquent" I'm afraid. It's an old word, origin unknown, for petty criminal, thug, someone behaving in an antisocial manner, etc.

Find out more here.

When I first lived in Scotland I was told NED meant "non-educated delinquent", but an older friend said that the term had been round a long time and he thought originated from a shortened form for youth gangs from Niddrie.

CHAV I am reliably informed by friends and relatives in the Police originated as Police slang "Council Housed and Violent" for gangs on council estates after various more derogatory terms they used to use were banned for reasons of political correctness!

I think the definitions of Ned and Chav as given here are Backronyms. I hadn't heard this term before but I like it.

I came across this term a while ago when I was doing some research into fringe political radicalism, used to describe the name of the RESPECT coalition, although the word acronym was used in my paper as my supervisor and I weren't sure it was a proper technical term!

PS RESPECT - Respect, Equality, Socialism, Peace, Environmentalism, Community & Trade unionism.

Perhaps you should suggest he does a ride drive half day course? They're about £130 and you tend to be tutored by a class 1 trained driver. Might save his life and countless others as he sounds like a right plank.

With any luck his community service might involve meeting families that have lost loved ones due to incompetent idiots like him.

He will have to take an extended course before he gets a UK licence. I think he'll need more than half a day's tuition to guarantee a pass. He is already missing his driving licence, so won't need reminding how valuable a piece of paper or plastic it is.
He isn't incompetent, he made a couple of very silly/dangerous decisions over the course of two years. I've passengered with him on numerous occasions and he really has been ok.
His community service is one day a week at a charity shop. So he'll smell off wee and cabbage for the next six months!
