N-vi Questions

Posted by: Muttly on 03 January 2006

Hi

Could any of you guys give me a little help clearing up a few questions.

1) Can the N-vi intergrate into my current CD5/FC/202/150x setup ?

2) Does it have a dedicated sub-woofer output ?

3) I have a Pioneer HD434 which is 720p/1080i capable will I need the scaler card for those resolutions ?

4) Is the N-vi good enough to replace my CD5 ? while I wait for my CDX2 Winker

5) Is NACA5 cable a must for all 5 channels (and/or) should all five channels use the same type of cable ?

Thanks a lot for any help, sorry if I've not spotted these elsewhere

1) Yes. It has an output for the preamp.

2) Yes.

3) Yes, which is true of any DVD device. The goodie is that the n-Vi has such a good picture that running 480p is better than most!

4) Hmm. Difficult one, this. The n-Vi is very good indeed, but from what I've heard (which was a brief hour or two) it's not as good as a CD5. So you'd be looking to get your CDX2 sooner rather than later, right? Smile

5) No, NACA5 is not required on all five channels. For best results all 5 channels should have the same cable in order to be timbre-matched. I heard the n-Vi with Chord Odyssey which I would not normally recommend with Naim. It was pretty good. However, Odyssey is expensive and I can see people buying Rumour or Carnival for the rears. I'd like to hear the n-Vi with NACA5 to see how it differs of course, but I'll have to wait until it becomes generally available for that.

I hope this helps!

FWIW, regarding the last point, at the Heathrow show the Naim Design/development chap I was speaking to said that it was designed to run a wide variety of speakers and cables, and not to be as demanding as traditional Naim amps for a spcific cable type i.e. NACA 5.

Great stuff Smile

Thanks Frank and Neil.

I'm having a demo of some stereo Naim gear in a couple of weeks, I'm going to see if I can squeeze a N-vi demo in too, will at the very least have a very close look over the unit.

edit: Frank, I'm not going to go into to much but I believe that my own Pioneer DV-868AVi does output a higher than 480p via it's own in built scaler.
