Knackered Compact Discs

After chatting to a friend earlier today about "The Police" (Sting's lot , not the uniformed variety) I thought I'd dig out my one and only Police CD, a best of called "Every breath you take" which I bought on it's release in 1986.
To my surprise it was not recognised by the CDP. My first reaction was this was my first taste of temperamental Naim CDP syndrome. I then tried it on my Marantz CD-63SE KI Signature in the bedroom system, the Denon in the kitchen and then my car CDP. All with the same result - zilch. Finally I shoved it in the PC and the PC asked me to insert a disc!
Whatever happened to the indestructible CD?
All of my music collection is handled carefully and immediately returned to it's container - be it CD or Vinyl. I'm now wondering how many of my other older CD's are going to spring the same surprise.
Anyone else had similar experiences?

I have had this happen many times. What typically happens is the labeling on older disc would actually cause deteriation of the protective layer which in turn would allow air entry and oxidize your discs. Fortunatly the record companies realized this and changed the ink for the labeling. Another issue is that the most delicate part of the cd is the label side wich is suppose to be the side you can handle if neccessary. The label side actually has the thinnest layer of protection. Makes me really wonder about the indestuctable disc. Roll Eyes

Hi Steve;

My 1994 re-master of 'Atom Heart Mother' looked like this, when I last tried to play it:-

Needless to say, no music was forthcoming. I've sent it back to EMI, and am still waiting for a reply, six weeks later!

Hi John,
I've considered sending the disc back but would doubt if a positive outcome would be forthcoming.
My disc isn't anything like yours though. A slight goldish tinge would be about the worst of it. I'd post a pic but don't have a clue how.
I'd be interested to hear if you have a positive result with your disc though.

As some have found/will find, some old CD- newer CDR etc of any era will fail before most old tapes or vinyl. I do not yet know about problems regarding overpriced minidisc.

hi,

I remember when all the experts were telling us that you could spread jam on a cd and it will play, not to mention using them as frisbys or beer mats.
If only we knew then what we all know now.
Most of them fail because of manufacturing errors.
