Real estate question

During my seventy sixth listen to Ryan Adams "Love is hell" this weekend I noticed the lyric in the beetlejuice inspired song "This house is not for sale" :
Do you remember when we even bought this thing
I danced you across the wooden floor and you signed the lease
Which has me a bit concerned. The title of the song : "not for sale", and the first of the quoted lines indicates that a sale and purchase agreement of said property has been entered into by said dead people, so what is the LEASE for ?
Are there any American real-estate agents out there that can shed some light on this unusual transaction ?

Mmm, I HAD considered this as a possibility. Maybe Ryan just hasn't got a clue about the nitty gritty of domestic property transactions, preferring to concentrate on his "meat and potatoes" BUT, it would have been nice if he had done just little a bit of research. And why did his record label accept this ? Would it have been so hard for them to get their vast legal teams to cast to an eye over any songs containing elements pertaining to legal dealings before turning them loose on an unsuspecting public ?
As for the rhyme thing, frankly the words "thing" and "lease" are not even close to rhyming, so that just doesn't wash. He could have saved me a hellofalotofbother if he used the word "documents" :
Do you remember when we even bought this thing
I danced you across the wooden floor and you signed the documents
or even better, dump the legalese altogether :
Do you remember when we even bought this thing
I shagged you against the wooden front door and the bell went ring.
or the turtle re-mix :
Do you remember when we even bought this place
I spun you round the wooden floor on your shiny carapace.

If the lawyers had inspected the lyrics they would have approved them as it would cause confusion, upset and misunderstanding in the general population and thereby generated revenue earning opportunities for lawyers.

In some cases a person will "lease to own" a property. Paying rent withn a portion going toward eventual purchase. However I doubt this was what is being refered to in the lyrics. It is probably as stated above, just a need for rhyming words.
