What would you do without music?

Posted by: Chillkram on 05 October 2007

I'd be seriously compromised. I enjoy listening to music most of the time, but my Saturday and Sunday afternoon sessions are often the highlight of my week. I really look forward to my chill out session in front of my speakers where I completely lose myself in the music and forget all the stresses of the week. It is a completely immersive experience for me and I don't think I could do without.

How would you cope?

I'm not sure I could. I guess we would manage some how.

BTW you been taking philosophy pills?

Not really Howard. I just thought I'd hang a couple of questions out there and see what response I got.

I'd probably practice a piano more.

I would design boring control system for trafic lights or nuclear reactors ( Smile this one is for Tuan)
Or... i would have started a company importing and distributing photo equipment. I could have been exclusive distributor of Canon or Nikon in Canada, whaa, big house, big car... but no music... no forget it. I prefer to be a Naim distributor and enjoy music at concerts Smile and occasionaly listen to what i sell. Smile Smile

Kuma,
I've gone a little 'the other way' now and play piano for about 90 minutes a day, If I can. Even at elementary grade 1 level there are some wonderful tunes to play, and making sounds IMV is better than listening to them!

Don't get me wrong, I have no intention of getting rid of my Naim kit etc, but since march I'm getting easily as much pleasure out of playing...

.....I'd probably learn to play my didgeridoo properly......

Cheers,

Mark,

Good question and one I have thought about before, here's my two options see which one is more realistic. Winker

One) Without Music in my life I would be able to put my unlimited talents to achieving World peace and the eradication of World Poverty. Oh! and win Miss World Big Grin.

Two) or I might just play Knights of The Old Republic more (That's a role playing computer Game for the older Gents) and learn to code for FOSS projects and mess about with my Linux box as well.

I'd miss it but not that much though, I think.

I love music but I love not having music. Listen to the sea. Listen to the wind in trees. Listen to birdsong. Listen to children playing. Listen to SWMBO sleeping. Listen to the night. Listen to the morning. The list goes on.

No, really it was just in reference to the cliche of the World Peace quote.

Good Question.....I have had music in my life since a very young age and remember being banished to the back room when visitors called.Great I thought, and would grab a pileful of records and play them one after another on our ITT Turntable for hours on end.
I used to love visitors calling to our house.
I have just had my system up and running now after a five week period without it. Even after the first couple of days I began to get withdrawal symptoms and was wondering how I was going to cope.I need to listen to music every day and I can never listen to music sitting down as I have to stand up and move from side to side in time to the music irrespective whether I'm listening to folk, rock, jazz etc.I need to always get inside the music and drift away, just listening is not good enough I need to get lost in music.Music..it feeds my soul.Could I cope without it ? NO WAY!

ps .You can take me away now.........

Regards,Toby.

Andy,

As my system gotten a half way decent, every time I play a piano, depression sets in.
( try play along Bill Evans ) Big Grin

I can practice 8 hrs. a day and still not good enough. I got so frustrated, I eventually quit playing.

But it can be theraputic when my mood sets in.

I can probably fit a pair of DBL in the room if I get rid of a piano, but I have no intention of doing so!

Glib answer probably....but since a lot of music is inside my head I can't see how I could be without it.

Dear Jim,

I suppose I read it literally as being removed from my head, rather than removed from audibility by deafness! Deafness would make next to no difference to me now!

George

I read it as being unable to listen to it via radio, hi-fi, iPod or whatever....Mark really needs to more clearly articulate his posts! Smile

Cheers

Hey, Ho! Dear Jim,

It would be a funny old world without music, or indeed without the other great Art forms. If there is a redeeming feature to the human specie then it must be high art. It certainly is not the application of brilliant technology, or the moral striving for civilisation, which progress seems to be at best "one step forward, followed by one all to quick step back," and some times worse. No doubt better times will follow our time, but I don't think the progress towards civilsation looks terribly promissing just now! Music is, for me, the escape route...

I have been without music for the last eight days, having taken my whole system in to Naim for a check up. I've done a little bit of listening using my budget DVD player and sound surround amp into my Allaes, but it's pretty dismal, so I've generally been watching a lot more television than usual. Fortunately the rugby has been on and two grand prix on successive weekends has helped, but long term I think I would go mad.

This afternoon we had a bit of a diversion when we went into town and bought No 1 son a very early Xmas pressent, a Gibson Les Paul guitar, which sounds beautiful. You should see the smile on his face, he's like a Cheshire cat!

What would I do without music - call it a day I think: music is what life's for - that and watching the Tractor Boys and a bit of cricket. The rest is just killing time.

What amp did you get to go with it?

Munch

He's currently using it with his old Kustom amp. He's got his eye on a nice Marshall, but that will have to wait until his birthday in June.

Good question.

Music has been at the forefront of my conscousness from my earliest memories. It still triggers far mor vivid recollection than does, for example, a picture. However, there are some aspects of music without which I would be happy to live: piped music in stores and restaurants, music from other peoples' cars, music used as a background to dialogue in film, tv and radio.

I use to relax mostly, but sometimes to gee myself up. I use to change my mood or enhance my mood. The sheer diversity of music amazes me. Without it, my life would be a much less intense experience. On the other hand, my bank balance would be significantly stronger and my flat would not be filling up with CDs!

I take the question to mean "...if music did not exist."

I might try to find fulfillment in intellectual activities such as reading classic literature, learning new languages or delving into the intricacies of computer operating systems.

Far more likely I would spend much more time in the pub. I might become a real ale aficionado.
