Nail in coffin for 35mm film cameras

Dixons are no longer going to stock 35mm film cameras as reported on BBC News

Other camera outlets soon to follow no doubt.

What I don't understand is that for such things as catalogue images why use film?

If glossys such as Digital Camera Magazine are anything to go by, the artefacts you can see on screen are gone in print and the images look stunning.

Why waste the money and the uncertainty on an old format?

Nice picture Joe

I'm not sure why this topic seems to generate so much heat each time it is raised. Sure, 35mm is moving towards being a niche product, but so are shortwave and amateur radio, vinyl records etc. While the majority of folks choose to use digicams or camera phones, I'll be happy to keep using slide film of some form or other; currently SCALA is still around (my favourite) otherwise I'll look at some other clear base monochrome film. Hopefully Leica will survive, but if not I'll get a few lenses and a spare body in the close-out sales and continue happily for the rest of my days with that setup. Digital movies still look inferior on the cinema screen, so some kind of 35mm film will be around for the foreseeable future, even if I have to buy a bulk length and load my own cassettes.

Gary,

Wow, a Rustin Cambridge - isn't it about time you bought a new car?

I have been watching A Digital Picture Of Britain and reckon it is well worth taking the time to view live or seting the pvr and watching at your leasure. I think the previous progs have been rather good and well worth watching.

Adam,

It seems that your decisions allow an individual to rile many others on the forum, but not an individual to rile an individual.

Gary, that is the best shot I've seen from you.

Joe, that's a great shot, but I think the horizon shouldn't cut through her neck.

In any event horizon through the neck in a no no.

Off with 'er 'ead

[sigh]

And this why I'll never be in the big leagues. All my photographic blunders become obvious to me only well after I've taken the shot. Though, to be fair, if I were to have placed the horizon well above or below Jelena's neck, I would have had to shoot from six inches above the ground or from a vantage about 15 feet higher than I stand. (The shot was taken atop a rather large rocky outcrop, several tens of feet above the shoreline of Georgian Bay.)

Joe

P.S. While I wouldn't condone purposely riling the group, personal attacks on an individual are, in my opinion, worse. There's no reason why the conversation can't stay civil.

P.P.S. iGary -- nice shot. Are you still using the Olympus?

Saving up for a -- oh, I dunno -- 30-inch monitor for your computer? (You know it's only a matter of time.)

My Contax G2 is made from titanium. Other 35mm cameras I once owned all felt like they were made from metal of some kind. Pentax ME Super, Pentax K1000 and Nikon FM2.

My Nikon D70s seems sturdy enough but does not feel as solid. Keeps the cost and weight down I suppose.
