Moving to Cambridge

Any tips on moving to Cambridge? I would love to live in the Mill Road area, but it's out of my budget. I am looking in Trumpington, Sawston, Shelford, Barton, Cherry Hinton and Fulbourn. Is there anything I should avoid?

Avoid Haverhill. It does have the plague, everyone has 3 eyes. Per head. It's very easy to see why the housing is so cheap, just take a walk through the town centre mid-week. Shiver....
Shame you can't manage the Mill Road area. We travel from Stansted to Al Amin Stores on Mill Road just for a few Asian food treats.
My wife works in Fulbourn, and says that off the main road and away from the flat roof estate it's an ok place.
Trumpington would be my choice. Wide choice of housing, near the M11/A14. And, biggest plus point, only 20 minutes from the King William IV pub in Heydon. Best pub/restaurant I've found, especially as I'm a veggie.
Sawston seems a bit weird. It used to be a bustling place, but most of the pubs have closed now, and it just seems to serve as a large estate for Cambridge and London. Good for Heydon too!
The Shelfords seem ok. Friendly enough. Characterful. Train station. Expensive too, I think.
Will you be working in Cambridge?

Thanks for the tips.

Yup - I've landed a 3-year research post in the school of clinical medicine.

Workmate of mine lives in the area and of the places you mention he would avoid Cherry Hinton and Fulbourne - nowhere near as nice as the firt 4 which he reckons are pretty equal.

Cheers

PS In my experience this should link to the Cycling On The Pavements thread as I nearly got clobbered in a pedestrian area by a student on a bike last time I was there!

Only nearly get clobbered? Must have been a quiet day.
