Shahinian Arcs plus IBLs in an AV system
Posted by: RichardHallman on 03 May 2002
Right, I've been shifting my hi fi around, and want to boost up to an AV system, but on a budget. Intend to use my existing gear (32.5/Hicap/250) for front channels - speakers are the aforementioned Arcs.
Had been intending to run the centre channel as "phantom", but have just remembered that I have a pair of half dead IBLs (one drive unit gone on one speaker). Any thoughts on the remaining good IBL as a centre, and how it might match?

....yes, as I thought, really - shame to have the IBLs sat doing nothing, but I'm sure I'll find a use one day.

The IBLs won't be magnetically shielded. This could lead to problems if you are using a TV in your AV system.
If you have a Dolby Digital decoder, then part of the Dolby Digital standard is that it should provide for the abilty to direct bass from the center channel to either a sub or the main left and right speakers. Few center channel speakers will reproduce a full range bass response anyway.
This still doesn't imply that the IBL will match acoustically with the ARCs. If the IBLs aren't suitable then it's still worth perservering to find something that is, if the budget can stretch to it of course. Shahinian Elfs possibly if magnetically shielded ?

I'll be running a projector, so no problem re shielding - currently budget is a priority, so I'll stick with a phantom (menace) until the ££££ are available for something suitable

It might work! You've got the thing. It obviously fits (otherwise you wouldn't mention it), no magnet problems. What's to lose? You'd still use the same rears as well. FWIW, I think it'd be a good match!

Frank.

Too true. Plenty more tinkering before I get to that point, but it's worth a try. Shame the other one is dead, as they might do the job as surrounds otherwise....

I've been trying Compasses as AV speakers with my DVD player (amongst other things) and I find their weird stereo a bit hit or miss, depending on the DVD. Curious.
