The Full 25mm!
Posted by: Alex S. on 01 March 2004
So. I did the Mem CU, then I did the 10mm spurs. Now I've done the 25mm armoured: A feed from my Mem CU back to the incoming supply. This mains upgrade is up there with the best - the usual stuff: much better grip, timing, pace, dynamics. For the first time ever my most difficult tracks bass-wise are no longer difficult.
Has anyone else tried such serious cabling? BTW 25mm armoured is a right bugger to route and bend!
Alex
PS Paul, what sort of salary can I expect as Naim's Export Sales Manager?

90% of the way through it right now..... it aint easy, but I guess it will be worth it in the end...
175m of 10mm cable, 4m of 25mm meter tails, 13 sockets.. and one hell of a lot of dust and b****y great holes in the floor.... (not to mention the 15 concrete blocks to strengthen the area round the Hi FI, and the 60m of new tongue & groove floorboards and 24m of 4x2 strengthening joists) I'm not goin to be moving anytime soon!!!

OOoooh y'all are in for a treat!
You wait about 8 ish weeks until its all run in and it will all be worth the effort.
This is a no-brainer upgrade and worth every penny and ounce of sweat IMO.

You do know that mains cable is directional, don't you?

Alex after wiring 150mm armoured cable, 25mm is a walk in the park

Alex
I plan to fit 4x 10mm spurs and new CU as my next upgrade. How does the 25mm compare with the 10mm spurs.
If you are interested the 150mm was power for an air compressor.

Alex, just so I understand fully...
Your CU is connected to your incoming supply (presumably at the meter?) with 25mm cable? Is this 25mm T + E or 2 x single core @ 25mm each?
Our meter appears to have 2 separate tails of single-core 10mm o/d each running to the CU, and this appears to be the biggest the meter end of it could take, so how do you go bigger?
Intrigued.

Mark, I think the slight confusion is down to how cables are sized. The proper way to quote cable size is by its cross sectional area, not o/d. Your 10 mm o/d cables are probably 25 mm CSA.

Mark, as Nick Lees so politely put it, I'm in a light industrial complex. This means my workshop is about 30m from the main building's incoming supply. So, what I've done is do the Roy thing inside the workshop with the Mem CU and the 10mm spurs. Then, being in a 3 phase complex (in an electrical rather than a Jungian sense) I've identified an otherwise unused phase from the main supply and run a 25mm armoured cable from it to my Mem CU. Naturally, I have Roy to thank for much of the work and all of the ideas.
I'm now toying with the earth. However, given that the earthing arrangements are not that great in the building, if I fit separate spike(s) I may end up draining the whole building to my earth which might not be good.

Aaahh! I see it all now. (Thank you Mr Tibbs!) I always forget that your "situation" allows you more space, volume and, er, volume! What a terrific opportunity to try stuff. I also suffer from "light industrial complex" but my shrink says I'm making progress.
Be carefull with that big sandy bit away to the south east. Even presidents come a cropper there.

Alexander!
Your earth is inadequate! You need 6 x 30mm earth spurs, laminated, armoured and RCBOed, DCTed, with a HERNIA 300 BO device.
Nothing else will do!
