Four decades of a flying giant
Posted on: 10 February 2009 by Tony Lockhart
I've done a few small jobs on 747s, and like Concorde, nobody seems to get used to the things. They are, when you work on them, simply massive. Working at the top of the tailplane on a wobbly scissor platform isn't for the faint hearted!

Best thing ever for me was when working at BA. My office overlook runway 27L. If you were on the phone when Concorde took off you just had to put the reciever on the desk till it was in the air and about 3 miles away. THEN watching a 747-400 take off REALLY makes you wonder how this slow, lumbering giant ever makes it into the air.

I've been in aviation since just after leaving school in 1981. I've done the maths, worked out the lift, obviously know the theory, can explain the theory to yer nan.... but I still look out of a window at the wing and think "No way!"

The Tornados I have worked on I can almost forget about the physics, they'll almost fly through thrust alone!
