Mains regeneration

Posted by: Jellyheadjeff on 28 July 2002

The chap I bought my 52 from (who was moving to Chord Amps) swore by the positive effect his PS Audio mains regneration device had (he quoted it cost him £3k and visually looked to me like the top of the range P1200). He did live a gob spit away from AWE at Aldermaston so in fairness he had a somewhat 'unusual' current draw nearby.

Any experience on this forum on the performance on this or similar devices?

Hi jellyhead:

I have a PP600 powering my system which is Armageddon, Hi-Cap/102 and 250. I find it to be an excellent piece and definitely raises the performance of the equipment. The best thing is that there are no 'bad mains' days. The sound from the system is consistent.

The only caveat is that even with a PP1200, a system with a couple of 135s et al is going to get awfully close to its power output limit (once you have the other system components plugged in too) and so adding more PowerPlants can get expensive real quick. However, for a medium sized system, I think it's a cracker!

PS. I've said it before but an Armageddon/LP12 driven by a PowerPlant is so tight and tuneful you wont want to live without it.

I have Power Plant 300 and founded it damages sound of all electronics(mostly dynamics) BUT...
for my LP12/Valhalla it makes miraculous thing.
In fact I cannot listen to LP12 without PP300.
And I don't understand now all the buzz about Lingo and Armageddon. But obviously PP300/Valhalla is more dear than Lingo or Naim PS.

My interest was mainly centred around cleaning up my mains (I've yet to track down the item causing this but I get 'pops' from the speakers periodically).

I don't yet have a dedicated spur into this room due to the fact that I am planning some building works next year which would force me to duplicate certain mains work. Are there any other products I should be considering that are not detrimental to the sound in the mean time?

Hi all:

mmhifi:
Have you tried the larger PPs? PS Audio themselves don't recommend the 300 for anything but source components.

jellyhead:
I've tried lots of the other gizmos (Monster, Chang etc.) and none work with Naim. You might want to see if you can borrow a PP600 or PP1200 but remember that it takes a while to get settled as it's basically just a big power amp. Mine took 3-4 weeks from new.

Also, when you get your wiring done have the sparky install a separate ground for the hi-fi as it makes an enormous difference with Naim kit.

No I didn't tried bigger models and used PP300 with turntable, cdp and phone preamplifiers(Prefix K/Hicap, Microgroove+) only. CDP and phonostages
definitely suffered. To the word I sell my Microgroove+ (I will use Prefix). It's 230v ac unit in exellent condition which was made by Tom Evans to my specifications- 70db gain and 560ohm input impedance. If somebody is interesting please drop me e-mail. I live in Israel.
