PS3 as a source

Posted by: Wazza69 on 29 May 2009

Hi,

I was considering getting a Mac Mini + (eventual) Naim DAC as a source. However, I thought that perhaps the PS3 would be a cheaper and more versatile solution? Obviously it plays blueray, games and a range of video files. Does anyone use one as a main source? Are there any downsides i.e. issues with filetypes, can it play hires files? Issues with cover art, speed issues, interface issues.

There is the problem of noise from the PS3, is it very noisy when playing audio files? I hear there is a redesigned version due in August so perhaps this could be the way to go?

Thanks again

There was a recent discussion about this.

Quite a few people tested the audio quality with PS3 v PC/SONOS/Mac and in every case the PS3 came out inferior.
