Ketil Bjornstad - info and recommendations anyone??
Posted by: Ian G. on 03 January 2006
Ketil Bjornstad is coming to Edinburgh and I fancy a night out! Never heard anything by him but I like Gustavsen, EST and Jarrett etc. Is this a good bet ?? What might be his best CD to start with ??
cheers

Ian,
I think this could be very interesting. I have not heard his recent releases since he left ECM so hard to say where the concert will be pitched.
It will not be like EST, but maybe more the Gustavsen direction but again no guarantee.
Some ECM CD's that I like are
The Sea
The Sea 2
Epigraphs - duet with David Darling on Cello and The River - the same.
Would like to hear , if you go, what ot was like.

Adrian is right, KB reminds Gustavsen, a bit.
I have bought 2 or 3 of his CD's (ECM) and decided that he's a BOF.
Just my view, though...

Ian,
The River / ECM.
It is not as daunting as Epigraphs, so you start with something more lively, but still thoughtful.

Thanks for the hints - I'll probably take a punt and go along anyhow. Live is often good anyhow.
Stefan - What is a BOF. ?? Bit of fluff ??

Sorry, Ian, I thought this was common "forum" sense (and the credits go to Geoff P).
"Boring Old Fart"
What I wanted to say is that I had bought his records, because I liked his "sound", but didn't find "music". He's not positioned as "audiophile", but shares this fate with the so called audiophile recordings. Often, musically, they bore me to death - but are fun to listen to, once in a while.
Much, much worse is the very hyped Ludovico Einaudi. His concerts sold out, raving reviews, but BORING, BORING and BORING, again.
OTOH, I'm currently enjoying a Polish piano player - Leszek Mozdzer - who blows my socks off, while I'm listening to him. Amazing !
(On another note: I've bought a cheapo Erik Satie 3 CD set with his piano work. Very minimalistic, but --- most exciting music. Different story, sorry, again...)
cheers

Try "New Life". Solo studio piano and rather fine in a very elegant way.
I have some of his live ensemble "concept" albums and they bore the p**s out of me.

Stefan,
If you think Ketil is boring, then I have a second as well as a third thought of recommending to you Morton Feldman's music which is wonderful but with 'not much happening there' or in other words: The mother of all minimalists!
You have to be in a special mood for it (do not drink any coffee for two days), but it is definitely worth a try.
Adrian, you too!

I like Ketil Bjornstad's music. I have several,
Water Stories (with Terje Rypdal)
The Sea (with Terje Rypdal)
The Sea II (with Terje Rypdal)
The River
Epigraphs
I prefer The Sea, but also The River, and Epigraphs which have piano and cello (Dave Darling).
If you are a fan of the ECM sound (I am) you'll like the minimalism of these disks.
