Shielded Mains Power Leads

Posted by: Ian B on 17 February 2004

Has anybody out got much experience with shielded mains cables? Several dealers have said these are a worthwhile upgrade but as total cost will be £400+ any thoughts or experiences would be much appreciated. I will be using them with NAC 52/NAP 135's and CDX/XPS.

Have a look at ...

and ...

I am in the process of trying the above. Shielded main cable is hard to get from consumer shops but is readily available from electrical wholesalers. Its quite cheap [say 1 Euro/Dollar metre/yard].

Hope this helps ...

Well shielded mains cables do lower the noise floor but quite often at the expense of speed and transient responce. ( not all, but many tend to sound that way )
...and be wary of mains with filters built-in.

What are your objections with stock cords?
They work reasonably well particularly with Naim gear. I've heard lot worse than these at lot more $$.

They certainly make things sound different, smoother with slightly less grain in my case. However after a while I realised I was also getting less detail and some of the typical Naim impact had gone, so I went back to the stock leads.

I think if shielded mains cable made a significant improvement to Naim kit, those nice people at Salisbury would supply them as standard.

I just try last week this kind of main cables (double shield) but the sound become too hard and harsh.
I prefere the original one or the clasic Merlino (TNT) single shield (without aluminium foil).
