Please can any one tell me who is the female singer on a advert singing a song I presume is called California Soul? thanks

Marlena Shaw - California Soul

Buy her compilation 'Anthology', or alternatively, get Brainfreeze by DJ Shadow, which is the mix CD that repopularized it. That said, I guess it was never going away since Gangstarr sampled it.

Oh, and don't ever eat KFC.

or, if you don't have most of the songs on other albums, WH Smiths are selling a double CD of 60's soul including the KFC ads.
Even has a little KFC sticker on the cover. eeugh.
Paul. who bought it yesterday. and it's great.

Noooo!

Don't give them your money, spend it at Soul Fire, Daptone, Jazzman, Soul Jazz, or BBE. Hell, buy the Slurped bootleg unmixed compilations of the Brainfreeze or Product Placement CDs rather than give the money to KFC!

Here is the tracklist for Brainfreeze

Mekon, funnily enough I've been looking for the Brainfreeze CD recently online. Details of stocks are sketchy but when I have found it there are invariably two versions, one a few quid more than the other. However, no site I've seen has details of the products and differences. Do you know what the differences are or any ideas where to look?

Regards and all that...JW

Any version you get will almost certainly be a bootleg. There were only a few thousand of the original that were ever made, and they go for big money on ebay. There are a couple of sites that list the differences, just do a search for Brainfreeze bootleg. I've never seen an original, but the bootlegs are everywhere (even HMV). The unmixed version is called Slurped, and has a cover in the same style as Brainfreeze. This has since been bootlegged (a bootleg of a bootleg!), and comes in all manner of plain coloured sleeves. Product Placement is the follow up mix by Shadow and Cut Chemist. It is also worth getting. I presume my copy of that is a bootleg too.

A friend bought this the other day. The quality of this CD is appauling. It even sounds bad in the car! I have other copies of some of the songs on this CD that sound fantastic. I can only put it down to bad production of the CD. I found it very tinny and lacking in any kind of life.

Glad I didn't pay my hard earned cash for it.
